Matkin was born in 1838, near Farmington, St. Francis county, Missouri. In 1864, when in the full vigor of youth, he went to California, whence about two years later he came to Montana. Here he entered the service of the old Diamond R. Transportation company, and continued in its service when it was controlled by E. G. Maclay, George Steell, Matt Carroll and Colonel Broadwater. He had charge of one of the large freight trains of the company which then did most of the transportation service in the territory, including that from Fort Benton to the mining regions. While engaged in this perilous duty in 1868, Mr. Matkin was shot in the hip by an Indian while following the wagon train which had left Benton in advance of him. The intrepid wagon master kept on his way despite the severe wound and came up with the train which prepared for defense. The teamsters conveyed Mr. Matkin back to Benton with tender care and he lay there a good while under medical care. The bullet was never found and he suffered ever after from the wound which defied surgical skill. His native energy was such that he overcame the worst effects of the wound and about 1870 he was at work again, this time with Whittenbaugh at the International Hotel, Helena. He stayed there until 1874 when he went to the Black Hills, Dakota, and remained there two years. He returned to Benton in 1878, and in partnership with Mr. Hunsberger, he managed the Overland hotel. In 1881, he was attracted by the silver discoveries to Barker, where he became recorder of the district. He afterward conducted a store for E. B. Largent at the place which was then called Johnstown, but is now within the railroad limits of Great Falls. He had always warm regard for Mr. Paris Gibson, and was one of the first to cooperate with him in the settlement of Great Falls. He took part in the first survey and henceforth resided here. In 1887 he was made county clerk in the bill that created Cascade county. He filled creditably the duties of the office, assisted by Ernest A. Ringwald. About that time he engaged in the cigar trade and also took charge of the post office. He subsequently added a saloon to his other business. All who knew him speak well of James W. Matkin, whose death will still cause sincere regret throughout the state as well as here. He had always a warm greeting for the friends of other days whether they had met with fortune or adversity. He was a true friend and never felt happier than when he was rendering a neighbor a good turn. He was loyal from first to last to Great Falls and joined readily in any movement for her advancement. He retained kindly regard for noble old Missouri, but his affections were entwined with Montana, which he deemed the most favored state in the America union. Many friends will miss his genial smile, his hearty grasp of the hand and his cheering voice, now alas, stilled in death. .......... Anaconda Standard (MT), 19 July 1890 James W. Matkin died at Great Falls Wednesday at the age of 52. He was wagon master in the well-known Diamond Company, and in 1868 was shot by an Indian. Matkin, yesterday, was largely attended, showing the respect and esteem in which the deceased stood in this community. Notwithstanding the oppressive heat it was the largest funeral cortege ever seen in Great Falls. The pallbearers were E.G. MacLay, J.H. McKnight, Ira Myers, W.S. Wetzel, A.E. Dickerman and C.M. Webster. At the cemetery impressive services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Pope, who paid a high tribute to the integrity and manly worth of the deceased.
