Pray was born in Indiana Feb. 13, 1849 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jessie Plotts, in Russell, Iowa, Sunday, July 17, 1910, aged 61 years, 6 months and 4 days, after a lingering illness covering a long period, but having been almost entirely helpless for the past year suffering patiently unto the end. Everything that a loving daughter and friends could do to alleviate his sufferings and make his last days pleasant were done and he only waited and longed for the release which death alone could give him, when falling asleep in this world to awaken in a brighter and fairer world beyond which his preparation gave him and his loved ones every assurance that he had attained. He was married to Sarah Ellen Rheubottom on February 24, 1876 in Terre Haute, Ind., to which union were born three children, Mrs. Jessie P. Plotts, Minnie E. and Robert W. The last two preceded him to the spirit world while young. The family came to Iowa in 1878, locating in Des Moines, where they made their home until 1884, when they started west for Mrs. Pray's health but on their way they were compelled to stay at Kansas City, Kans., where Mrs. Pray died and was buried. The family went on to Colorado where they remained about a year, returning and locating at Corydon, where they made their home until 1897, since that time making his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Plotts in Russell. He united with the University Place Church of Christ in Des Moines, of which denomination he was a faithful member at the time of his death. He frequently expressed his desire to go home and be at rest. He enlisted in the U.S. Army near the close of the Civil War and served three years, receiving an honorable discharge. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon, a brief service being held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Plotts, Rev. Knowles, of the Christian church, having charge, being assisted by Rev. S. A. Soxe. The funeral discourse was delivered at Bethlehem and interment made in the New York cemetery, where also lie the remains of his father and several brothers. He leaves one brother, Robt. Pray, of Muskogee, Okla., besides other relatives and a loving daughter to mourn his loss. The floral offerings were abundant and beautiful expressing in but a feeble way the sympathy and esteem of the many friends of the grief stricken family.
