Description	:	James W. Tuma, son of Joseph F. Tuma and Anna Barbara Skremiler married Anna Moravecek February 3, 1903in Howard Co, NE. They were both born in Omaha, Nebraska. Their families traveled west in a covered wagon and filed a homestand on land west of Cotesfield. Cotesfield was built later. The Tumas filed a homestead on land that could be farmed. Later, when the Moravec's came, the land that was left was very hilly and rough and they homesteaded a timber claim and were required to plant 300 trees or pay $300.00 to hold it. Their families traveled west in a covered wagon and filed a homestand on land west of Cotesfield. Cotesfield was built later. The Tumas filed a homestead on land that could be farmed. Later, when the Moravec's came, the land that was left was very hilly and rough and they homesteaded a timber claim and were required to plant 300 trees or pay $300.00 to hold it. There weren't many trees except along the river. It was very difficult to find enough trees for the claim, the only means of travel was by team and wagon. Finally, John Moravecek, Anna's father had to pay $300.00 so as to keep the claim. The Tuma and Moravecek (Moravec) families were neighbors and their children attended the same school. Schools were built as soon as the lands were settled - families were very concerned about the education of their children. They wanted their children to learn the English lanaguage (they learned it from their children). After James W. Tuma and Anna Moravecek were married, they bought a farm southeast of Elba, Nebraska from Joseph Zavitka. They lived in a sod house at the foot of a big hill. Later, Pa built a granary on the flat ground at the top of the hill, this granary was the first building constructed. James A. and Lucille (Lucy) were born in the sod house. The interior was made of wood and it burned when the cook stove became overheated. Then the family moved into the granary and lived in it until their new house was built, on level ground above the big canyon. The first several months of James and Lucy's existence was in the granary. It must have been comfortable as they both survived and were healthy and strong. Except for James and Lucy, the rest of the children in the family were born in the house upon the hill.
