Description	:	It is believed that the date of birth on James' stone is incorrect, as his father was remarried to Nancy W. (Rowland) Keith on June 23, 1841, in Van Buren County, Iowa. Census records indicate that he was born about 1839/1840, Iowa. James married Lydia A. Pickerel on February 26, 1863, in Wapello County, Iowa. Some people believe that Lydia died in Oregon, Holt County, Missouri, in 1879 or 1881. In the 1885 census of Wapello County, Iowa, there is a son William W. Moss age 4, born in Kansas. Pickerel on February 26, 1863, in Wapello County, Iowa. Some people believe that Lydia died in Oregon, Holt County, Missouri, in 1879 or 1881. In the 1885 census of Wapello County, Iowa, there is a son William W. Moss age 4, born in Kansas. Therefore, 1879 is probably wrong unless James remarried shortly after Lydia's death in 1879 and was widowed again by the 1885 census. Moss, formerly of Ottumwa, but who in the past two years has made his home with his son Fred at Walsenburg, Colo., died suddenly at 3 o'clock this morning in that place. His remains will be brought back to Ottumwa for burial. Mr. Moss resided here for many years and until about two years ago made his home with his daughter, Mrs. L.E. Byrum at 301 Richmond avenue. The telegram announcing his death was received this morning but gave no details beyond that the death was sudden. He was not known to have been ill. The deceased was 73 [sic] years of age at the time of his death. The survivors are five sons and two daughters as follows: Henry Moss of Ottumwa, Fred of Walsenburg, Colo., and William, James and Gene, address unknown. Also Mrs. L.E. Byrum and Mrs. M. Sumner of Ottumwa. --------------- Obituary From "Ottumwa Courier," Wednesday, December 10, 1913: J.W. Moss The body of J.W. Moss, who died Monday morning at Oak View [sic], Colo., will arrive here at 11:20 tonight and will be taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. L.E. Byrum, 305 Richmond avenue. The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon from the Byrum residence, Rev. Jonathan Lee in charge. Burial will be made in Shaul cemetery.
