He attended Baker School and Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, then completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Iowa, in Iowa City. His father, Jim, his grandfather, Charlie, his great grandfather, James, and his great, great grandfather Nathan were all farmers in Decatur County, Iowa. The same can be said of his mother's family. Today only distant relatives remain in the area. Jim would tell of his horse, Speedy, that he often rode to school when weather permitted. As a young man he would shuck and scoop corn by hand with his father, on foot walking the rows of cornstalks. Jim and all of his siblings left the farm: four settling in California, one in Florida and one in Iowa. After college graduation from University of Iowa, Jim moved to the Quad Cities, where he met and fell in love with Mary Roussell. They married on August 3, 1951 and raised five children: Jim, Connie, Steve, Debbie and Carol in the small town of Carbon Cliff, Illinois; in 1968 moving to Moline, Illinois. Jim's working career was in the Test Engineering department of International Harvester Company. He tested harvesting equipment before it was put into mass production. He completed 29 years of service before retiring. In addition, beginning in 1962, Jim began buying, rehabbing and owning rental properties - single family, duplexes and apartment buildings. He owned as many as 40 to 50 at one time as landlord. Jim and Mary's home in Moline, Illinois sat on top of a great hill with trees hundreds of feet high. Jim managed to hang a rope swing onto one tree and grandchildren loved to to swing out across the hill as far as possible as if they were flying through the air. Jim and Mary also had steps laid down across the side of the hill. It was like an adventure out of Lord of the Rings for grandchildren as they could make their way down the impossibly steep hill. The back of the home was also paved with bricks but had a smooth concrete surface in the middle. This may have been used for playing shuffleboard long ago but the markings had been worn away. -Marc We recall the food he would prepare: cinnamon rolls, making pans of fudge and cooling them on the back porch, rhubarb pies. Jim had a passion for cooking. When family visited he was always busy in the kitchen preparing food. During Thanksgiving he would bake a large turkey for all the family and prepare his famous homemade gravy dressing. -Marc Jim loved waking up early and making pancakes for grandchildren in the morning. He taught the importance of knowing how to cook and how it can bring family together to create lifelong memories. -Marc Dad included his children in building a working tractor. He also made a swing set, merry-go-round and huge sandbox for his children! He was always thinking of things to make their childhood memorable. Even buying a go cart! Which Connie gave little Carol a ride around the yard and she quickly fell out! He worked with his sons to rebuild wrecked cars for them to drive. Jim having a great Camaro and Steve a XKE Jaguar. Jim and Mary loved celebrating holidays with family. For Christmas they kept a white Christmas tree upstairs and another Christmas tree in the basement. The basement had a Christmas theme year round and it always brought joy seeing the multicolored lights. -Marc Jim also loved to travel. He and Mary visited Russia in the 1990s. He even received a plaque from American Airlines in the 1970s celebrating flying over 100,000 miles. He hung this plaque proudly in his den alongside his coin collection he had framed on the walls. Jim also loved to drive and even at age 72 drove his truck twelve hours to visit his son Steve in Florida and then drove back home to Moline with Mary. -Marc He also enjoyed staying up to date on current events. He subscribed to two newspapers: Quad City Times on the Iowa side of the river and Daily Dispatch on the Illinois side of the river. -Marc In addition to cooking Jim also had a passion for building. He had a garage a few miles from home that stored thousands of tools. He took extra wood cabinets he had stained and constructed large chests and gave these to his children as heirlooms. Additionally, he built 3 playhouses that included functioning windows and a miniature entry door just the right size for his grandchildren -Marc Jim also enjoyed teaching the value of hard work and saving money. He always owned a truck and he would collect glass pepsi bottles and pop-cans and then drive across the bridge to the Iowa side to collect the recycling money. This taught his grandchildren the importance of patience and value of saving for the future.. He would also sometimes take his grandchildren to his rental property when he emptied the rental units washing and drying machines. When he put the key to unlock the coin collector it was almost overflowing with quarters- one had never seen so many! This taught the value of hard work and entrepreneurship. -Marc Before the invention of keypad garage door entry Jim used his knowledge and skills to make life easier for his family. It's still not clear how he did it but it involved hammering two nails into where a keypad garage door entry would be and then running wires to the inside garage door button. He hung a washer on a nail that could be used to complete the circuit between the two nails which then opened the garage door. This allowed family to open the garage door any time, they loved seeing their children and grandchildren! -Marc Jim also had a love for animals. His last pet he owned was a small Chihuahua named Chico. Chico was spoiled when grandad shared his favorite drink- Pepsi! He also previously owned two pomeranians both black in color named Dusty and Sassy. Before that he owned two shelties one named Max and the other Lee. -Marc Jim seemed to have a endless supply of wisdom, jokes and riddles. He would recall that a friend had named their two dogs "soap" and "water". During dinner a guest looked down at the plate they were eating from and noticed the plates weren't very clean. The guest asked the friend if he forgot to wash the dishes and the friend said that's impossible because he made sure that soap and water cleaned each dish after every meal! The guest was disgusted upon learning that soap and water were his dogs names! -Marc He valued education and paid for all 5 of his children's college expenses to help them have a great life -Debbie He loved turkey dressing and would make it homemade during Thanksgiving. -Debbie For most of his life everyone thought his favorite candy was cherry cordials. We found out at age 83 that cherry cordials were not actually his favorite candy- chocolate pecan turtles were! All these years he told everyone he liked cherry cordials because then his candy supply wouldn't disappear so fast since no one else liked cherry cordials! -Debbie Jim's health began to decline many years ago. He was afflicted with the beginnings of dementia brought on by mini strokes. The doctors have said it was not discovered since people of high intelligence are able to mask the symptoms of short term memory loss. Yet his decline led to his move from Moline, Illinois to Champaign, Illinois in September, 2012, then to Illinois Knights Templar Home in Paxton, Illinois, in April 2013, where he was tenderly cared for his remaining days. Jim broke a hip July 4th, 2015 and experienced a drastic decline. He enjoyed visits from many of his family members at that time.
