Read More	LONACONING STAR Lonaconing, Maryland ANSWERS LAST ROLL CALL Mr. James Weir, Veteran citizen, Famer Goes to a Just Reward Mr. James Weir, Sr., aged 68 years, an old and highly respected citizen of this community, passed quietly away on Thursday last at his home in Garrett County, near Lonaconing. Mr. Weir had been confined to his bed only since the preceding Sunday. Death came at 2:10 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Shortly before Mr. Weir breathed his last, Messrs. Samuel Nichols, John C. Donald, and William and James Atkinson, former army conrades of the deceased in the Civil War, gathered around the bedside. Mr. Weir recovering from a sinking spell recognized the old soldiers and bade them a last farewell. The scene was most affecting. Mr. Weir was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, on March 15, 1840. He was left an orphan at the early age of ten years. His brother, William, took charge of him at that time, and in 1853 brought him to America, where they settled in Franklin (Maryland). Mr. Weir when quite a boy, found employment in the coal mines and followed that occupation until 18 years ago when he retired to take care of his farm in Garrett County, Maryland. On May 5, 1864, while a soldier in the Union Army, Mr. Weir married Miss Annie McMillan, of Franklin. To do this, Mr. Weir had to cross the rebel lines, and his was almost captured. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Weir enlisted in Company D, 2nd Maryland Regiment attached to the Potomac Home Brigade. He was honorably discharged in 1865, as a sergeant. During the war, Mr. Weir participated with his regiment in the battle of the Wire Bridge, Springfield, West Virginia, and in Hunter's famous raid. He was also engaged in many important skirmish battles from Martinsburg, to Lynchburg, Virginia, known as the Shenandoah Valley. Mr. Weir moved his family to Lonaconing in 1870, and occupied a house on Railroad Street. About 34 years ago, he bought the farm in Garrett County, where he made his home up to the time of his death. Deceased is survived by a widow and seven children, four sons and three daughters. They are: Messrs. Hugh, James, Jr., Thomas, and Walter Weir of Garrett County, and Miss Rhoda Weir, Mrs. James Smith and Mrs. Peter Smith, Jr., of Lonaconing.
