Heath of Peabody, Kansas was struck by lighting one day last week and instantly killed. Death of James W Heath The sad announcement of the death of Mr. Heath was wired to his friends here, from Peabody, Kansas on Saturday the 26th of June. The particulars of his death we have just learned from his brother Warnock who with his wife and Mrs. Web Journell have just returned from the funeral. Mr. Heath was a well known and highly esteemed citizen of Concord, from his infancy up to his removal to Kansas three or four years ago. He was engaged and the time of his death in cutting some wild sunflowers on his brothers farm near Peabody, Kansas and when the storm approached he left his work and started to the house with scythe in hand, and walking some four rods was struck by lightning. The hands in an adjoining field had been driven to the house by the storm, not knowing that Mr. Heath was on the farm. His wife inquired for her husband, a search was made with the above result. His hat, clothes and boots were torn into shreds, even the buttons torn from his clothing and in some instances melted. He was about 38 years old and for many years a member of the Church at Concord. He was the son of James W. Heath of Quincy. Mr. Heath was an excellent young man and enjoyed to a very large degree the confidence of his fellow men. His remains were interred at Peabody under the direction of the Odd Fellows A very large concourse of people attended the last sad rites. He was a good man and none will cherish his memory more than the writer. T.S.Mc Thurs July 27 1893 Champaign Democrat pg 4 Early in the past week we were the recipient of a postal card calling us to the funeral of our lifelong friend, Wesley Heath. Hither we went, and when we neared the final resting place of the deceased, though more than an hour before the services were to begin, we found the people coming from every direction to pay their respects to one that all had learned to love. The deceased was born on his grandfathers farm (Zachariah Heath) in Concord township on the 8th of Feb and was consequently in his seventieth year. At the age of about 14 yrs he was converted at camp meeting on the Newman campground in Adams Twp. In 1846 he joined the M.E. church at Concord Chapel and for the remainder of his life he remained an active, devout Christian man, exerting his influence over his fellow men far above the average. Perhaps no man ever lived in that community that enjoyed the esteem of his fellow men to a greater degree, or was more worthy to receive it. Long before the funeral procession arrived, the main audience room was filled to its utmost and many were waiting on the outside. About 1848 he married Nancy Ann, youngest daughter of Jacob Barger one of the pioneer settlers of Anderson Creek Valley. After the death of Mrs. H. he married Mary Jane, eldest daughter of the late Madison Barger. Some years since when he retired from the farm he moved to Quincy where he spent the balance of his life. A few days before his death he said he wanted to visit the old neighborhood again and contrary to the advice of his physician he came, and after a few days it became evident that his end was approaching and he was hurried home to die. At his request the venerable John G. Black who was with him when he passed away, preached at his funeral. The pallbearers were Messrs. Nelson Curl, Thomas Idle, Jacob Allinger, Jonathan Albright, Enoch Styles and J.M. Cost. The most of the children of Mr. H. reside in Kansas and were duly notified by a telegram of their fathers death. When the minister arose in the pulpit, instead of announcing his text, he read a telegram announcing the coming of his two sons and requesting a suspension of services until their arrival. This was done and for almost an hour the vast assembly sat in silence awaiting the coming of the sons. During this interval our mind dropped back to the 22nd of May 1841 when the grandmother of these men was buried, the first at Concord when it was in the woods with no enclosure, and we drew a contrast between that period and now, when two of the sons were coming more than 900 miles and the fact being heralded in advance by telegram. When the sons Jacob and Warnock came into the church there was scarcely a dry eye in the house. The scene was one affecting one beyond description. An appropriate discourage was then preached by the minister from the 23rd verse of the 25th chap of Matthew ‘Well done thou good and faithful servant”. His remains were then laid away beside the wife of his youth, and near the spot where he had for so many years come to worship. At the organization of the church at Concord in 1824 his grandfather Zachariah Heath was one of the first trustees. We cannot let the occasion pass without referring to the fraternal feeling that existed between the deceased and the writer acquainted from early boyhood and the years of early manhood too, and beyond and ran through a period of more than fifty years unshaken. He was a man far above the average to that which goes to make a successful citizen, and none is entitled to more credit for having given his influence in the right channel, at all times and everywhere. The memory of Wesley Heath will not be forgotten for generations to come. P.O.P.
