Read More	James Wesley Torrence son of John Torrence and Rebecca (née Mullenix) Jordan was born on 18 October 1831, in Liberty Township in Fairfield County, Ohio and died on 28 February 1879, in Liberty Township in Fairfield County, Ohio. He became afflicted with “white swallowing” (probably an old name for tuberculosis of the bones) in his right knee and the pain made him reliant upon a crutch and cane much of his adult life. As a young man in Ohio from early on he proved to be a hard worker and found employment as a turnpike tollgate keeper and occasionally taught school. During harvest times, he was in demand as a stacker for bundled grain held for the thrashers. He learned the tailoring trade and became a traveling tailor employed by store merchants in Rochester, Star City, Kewanna, Winamac, Royal Center, and others cities in Indiana. As a journeyman tailor James would measure, cutout, and make the preliminary construction of suits, before turning them over to female seamstresses for the final needle work. Once completed, he would return to the store with the finished suits and make any final adjustments. He married on 19 April 1855, at Grass Creek in Fulton County, Indiana his cousin, Lucretia Jane Torrence. They initially live in an old log cabin that his grandfather had built when he had first homesteaded in Fulton County, Indiana. They eventually returned to Liberty Township in Fairfield County, Ohio. This first union produced: Francis “Frank” Marion Torrence (1855-1931) Rachel Rebecca Torrence (1857-1947) Annetta Jane Torrence (1859-1908) William Rea Torrence (1861-1939) Mary Atheanna Torrence (1864-1864) Lewis Grant Torrence (1866-1874) Eliza Bing Torrence (1868- 1869) Martha Ellen Torrence (1870-1909) Clarence Eddy Torrence (1873-1873) After the death of his first wife, Lucretia, James married on 27 June 1875, in Liberty Township in Fairfield County, Ohio his second wife, Mary Jane Broyle. They had a son: John Perry Torrence (1876-1944)
