Description	:	Jas. W. Fowler was born March 23rd, 1844, died November 2rd, 1907, aged 63 years, six months and ten days. Fowler was born March 23rd, 1844, died November 2rd, 1907, aged 63 years, six months and ten days. In the spring of 1862 he joined the Confederate army; went out with the Union troops, and was enrolled as a soldier in General Ransom's command. No Southern boy made a more gallant and brave soldier. He wore the gray with loyalty to his country, with honor to the Old North State, with credit to himself and to the county of his birth (Union). He went through the four years' struggle under General Ransom and was with him when he gave up his sword. When the war closed he returned home and at once began with honest toil and courageous manhood to repair the waste and restore the loss which one only who had gone through a four years' siege of war could see and realize. On the 25th of July, 1865, he was married to Miss Unica Hasty. To them were born twelve children, six sons and six daughters. The husbandly affection he manifested to his wife and the reciprocal from her to her husband, the fatherly devotion to his children and the filial affection of the children to their father was beautiful to behold. In August, 1866, in young manhood, he was converted to God and joined the Methodist Protestant church at Old Tabernacle. He was a member here until this church became extinct, built and reorganized a new church at Grace Chapel. On the 23rd day of last August Grace Chapel church was formally received into the Methodist Episcopal church, South, by vows. In the transfer Bro. Fowler, true to his church and loyal to his Maker, came with his church to the M. E. church, South. Since that time the writer has been his pastor. I have been impressed with his religious life and high christian character. He impressed me as a godly man. In his affliction it was edifying and encouraging to observe his patience in affliction, his strong faith in God, and his resignation to the will of the Lord in the hour of the dissolution of the soul from the body. We believe his soul is with the spirits of the disembodied saints in the realms of glory. The large number of people present to sympathize with the bereaved family and witness his funeral and burial, showed the high esteem in which he was held by the large circle of friends and relatives among whom he was known. The writer, assisted by Rev. Mr. Ware and Rev. Clarkson of Monroe, and Rev. J. D. A. Secrest, a life long friend of the deceased, conducted his funeral at Grace Chapel on Monday, Nov. 4th, 1907.
