Wounded near Petersburg, VA in June 1864. Returned to duty in Sep. 1864. Paroled at Mocksville on June 7 1865. Served in same unit with brother, Pleasant. Brother Javis/Jabus served in cavalry. This family often dropped the Barney from the last name, using Castle. James married Julia Moss, daughter of James & Lucy Moss, in Grayson VA, 1868. She may also be buried here. ∼James was the son of Levi Barneycastle and Hannah Elrod. He was born in Davie County, North Carolina, where many branches of the family are still living. Unlike the Davie County families who shortened their name to Barney, James shortened his surname to either Castle, Cassel, or Cassell. His tombstone shows the original Barneycastle but most of his children used the name Cassell in the end. James married Julia Ann Moss, January 5, 1868 in Grayson, VA. He had moved there after the Civil War. He served in North Carolina Company D & E, 42nd NC Infantry, CSA. He was wounded in Petersburg in June 1864. He served with brother Pleasant, while brother Jabus served in the Cavalry. James and Julia had 6 children: Levi, John F., Mack C., Cora Ida, Birdie Lee, Lucy Almirty.
