Description	:	Note: James’ obituary, which I have transcribed below, gives his date of birth as December 30, 1884. His gravestone shows the birth year as 1894. On James’ World War I Draft Registration, he stated his date of birth was December 30, 1883, and on his World War II Draft Registration, he gave his date of birth as December 30, 1884. From looking at the age he was in the various census records, I do not believe the birth year of 1894 is correct, and I am using the date in his obituary as the date on this memorial. ------------------------------------- Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” October 3, 1966: James W. Carothers, 81, of 526 Pershing died Sunday at 2:40 a.m. at St. Joseph following a short illness. Mr. Carothers was a former employ of Schafer Ice Co. The son of John F. and Donna Turner Carothers, he was born in Jefferson County, Va., Dec. 30, 1884. He had lived in Ottumwa the past 50 years. He was married to Bertha Miller Nov. 13, 1926 in Ottumwa. She survives. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Belle Schafer of Ottumwa and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters. The service will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Chapel in charge of J. Elbert Mathews of Bible Chapel. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Edward Wilkerson, Roger Buckley, Cecil Scott, Bob Wilkerson, William Mosher and Victor Barnett. The casket will be closed at the beginning of the service.
