Description	:	James W. "Bill" Friel died Friday of natural causes at his home in Council Bluffs. He was 81. Bill Friel was born in Grand Junction to Fergus E. and Alice C. (Gibbons) Friel on June 2, 1923. He graduated in 1941 from St. Francis High School in Council Bluffs and attended Creighton University for three years. Friel served in the U.S. Army during World War II, rising to the rank of sergeant major. "Bill" Friel died Friday of natural causes at his home in Council Bluffs. He was 81. Bill Friel was born in Grand Junction to Fergus E. and Alice C. (Gibbons) Friel on June 2, 1923. He graduated in 1941 from St. Francis High School in Council Bluffs and attended Creighton University for three years. Friel served in the U.S. Army during World War II, rising to the rank of sergeant major. While in the service, he was cited for saving the lives of 14 soldiers and one Army nurse after their plane crashed in the Bay of Mokpo, Korea. Friel worked as an agent for the Internal Revenue Service for 33 years, retiring in 1979. After his retirement, he continued to work in tax preparation and enjoyed sharing his Irish wit with those that he cared for and loved. Upon his retirement, Friel received the Albert Gallatin Award, the Treasury Department's highest career honor. A member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Friel was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, John and Robert Friel. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Jo (Kenney) Friel of Council Bluffs. Other survivors include daughters, Mary Ann Lattimer and husband, Charles, of Yorktown, Va., Jo Ellen Friel and Sharon Marie Friel, both of Council Bluffs, and Patricia Jean Ostronic and husband, George, of Omaha; sons, James W. Friel II and wife, Donna, of West Branch, and Thomas G. Friel and wife, Debra, of Chesterfield, Mo. Other survivors include four grandchildren;,James W. Friel II and wife, Becky, of Carroll, Jennifer Marie Headlee and husband, William, of Pittsburgh, Charles William Lattimer of Stamford, Conn., and Michael Patrick Lattimer of Richmond, Va. He also leaves one great granddaughter, Grace Anne Friel.
