The Patriot Chronicle - What Cheer, Iowa Wednesday February 16, 1938 Page 3 James William Griggs James William Griggs was born in New Lisbon, Ind., March 22, 1864 and died at his home in Fremont, Tuesday, February 1, 1938. He came to Iowa with his parents at the age of 14. They settled near Indianapolis and he had resided in Mahaska county since then. He was united in marriage to Hattie E. Riggs of White Oak community on January 7, 1886. To this union were born one daughter and four sons, all of whom survive together with the wife. The children include Mrs. C.J. Kennel of Fremont, Bruce E., of University Park, Taylor D. of Detroit, Mich., Harry S. of Portland, Ore., and Fred I. of Freeport, Long Island, N.Y. He also had eight brothers and two sisters. Five brothers survive including John A., E. E., Thomas O., and Charles M. Griggs, all of What Cheer, and David O. of LeHigh. There are seven grandchildren. While living in the Cedar community he united with the Friends church. Short funeral services were held at the home at 1:15 p. m. Friday, February 4, 1938, preceeding the services at White Oak Community church, northeast of Fremont, with Rev. Nelson Murdock in charge at 2 p. m. Burial was in White Oak cemetery.
