Hammond, 78, retired newspaper publisher and founder of the Holdrege Citizen as a daily newspaper, died Wednesday night following a heart attack. Funeral arrangements were pending the arrival of a son, Dean Hammond, newspaper publisher at Del Norte, Colo. Hammond, former state senator and one time nominee for congress, retired from the newspaper business in 1942 because of ill health. * He came to Holdrege in 1923 as owner of the Holdrege Citizen, then a hand-set weekly newspaper. In 1932 he converted it to a tri-weekly and four years later became a daily. Hammond sold the plant on his retirement. Born in Nemaha county, Hammond moved with his parents as a youngster to Frontier county. After leaving college at Peru, he joined a brother in the newspaper business at Fairbury. * Later he owned a newspaper at Cook, Neb., and still later published the Cambridge, Neb., Clarion. While living in Cambridge he served two terms in 1917 and 1919 as a state senator. He was a republican nominee for the congress from this district in 1934 but was defeated by Charles G. Binderup of Minden, who died last week; was a past president of the Rotary Club, director of the chamber of commerce and past master of the A.F. & A.M. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte; son, and a brother, George Hammond, of Fullerton, Calif.
