Description	:	James William Murray 72, of 218 Cumberland Street, a salesman, died last night, June 18,1940 at his home, of a heart attack. He was a native of Hancock and a son of the late James P. and Margaret (Light) Murray. He was a life long member of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Read More	James William Murray 72, of 218 Cumberland Street, a salesman, died last night, June 18,1940 at his home, of a heart attack. He was a native of Hancock and a son of the late James P. and Margaret (Light) Murray. He was a life long member of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mabel (Athey) Murray, a son, C. Athey Murray, and grandchildren, all of Cumberland, MD. Mr. Murray had been a resident of Cumberland forty years, coming from Hancock. He was well known as a traveling salesman through the Tri-State territory and was at work yesterday, becoming ill at Oakland. His son brought him home and his death followed several hours later. Mr. Murray came from a family of pioneers. His paternal grandfather was Joseph Murray, who was a private backer at Hancock in the early seventies and was prominently identified with Western Maryland affairs during and after the Civil War. He was a warm friend of David Hunter Strother, "Porte Grayon", whose family shrine is at Berleley Springs. Strother was an officer in the Union Army. His fame, however, rests with his having been an author and artist. On his maternal side, Mr. Murray was a grandson of the late Joseph Light, a pioneer hotel proprietor of Hancock, who conducted The Old Light HOuse, which was torn away to make room for the Western Maryland Railway Station. In the Light House, in July 1824, John Johnson, chancellor of Maryland died suddenly. He was on his way to Berkeley Springs as a commissioner for Maryland in a boundary dispute with Virginia. He was buried in Hancock. Mr. Murray interred in Rose Hill Cemetery. The pallbearers were Harry B. Simpson, Harold C. Turner, Griffin A McGinn, Iley Sponseller, R. Mason Hill and John J Robinson. Among those in attendance were Mrs. Solomon E Exline and Mrs. Charles Murray and daughter, Jean, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Joseph T. Murray and daughter, Mrs. Lillian McDonald, McKeesport and Charles McKinley, a nephew, Hancock.
