In the 1880 census it shows the Pittman Family living in Rocky Mount, Franklin, Virginia. On December 12, 1899 James was married to Percy M Ramsburg in Richmond, Virginia where it said he was living at the time working as an iron worker. They had a daughter born October 11, 1900 in Richmond, Virginia on her birth certificate it list him as working for the railroad. According to his daughter Naomi her mom died when she was born and she was raised by her dad's sisters, Bertha, Cora, Hazel and Celeste. It is assumed James was estranged from his daughter Naomi and her family because not much was known about James after that, his grandkids did not have much of a memory of him and did not know much about him. Everyone of the grandkids I talked too thought he had passed away when they were young. Through other research I found James was live living in the Baltimore area until 1950. James Pittman worked for Baltimore and Ohio Railroad from November 27 1904 to November 19, 1943. As an employee he started as a Brakeman and then worked as an extra conductor and then in October of 1912 became a regular conductor. As an extra conductor he would have got a lot of bad slots until holding a regular slot. Advancement on the railroad was based usually strictly by seniority. In October 1918 on his employee file it states "with several other employees implicated in robbery of some merchandise cars at the New York avenue yard during the first part of October 1918. He left town and has failed to report for duty since the above and his record showed him being dismissed. Then on September 12 1919 it states general manager Galloway authorized retention of service for James William Pittman." According to the railroad he must have been friends with manager Galloway to be reinstated. Then he had a clean record until he retired November 19, 1943. Searching through many documents and sources we find James William Pittman re-married and was living in Maryland in the 1910 and 1920 census. He was married to Georgie born in Virginia. In the 1910 census it shows only James (born in North Carolina which we know it was actually Tennessee) and Georgie (born in Virginia) living in the District of Columbia and in the 1920 Census It shows James (41 born in Tennessee) head of house, Georgie (41 born in Virginia) wife, Mary L. Hudson (22 born in Maryland) step-daughter and James Pittman (4 born in Maryland) son. On September 12 1918 we see James registered for the US draft in World War I. It shows him as James William Pittman being 40 years old and is a US citizen living in Prince George's county, Maryland. It shows him working as a conductor for B & O Railroad which stands for Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. It has him listed as being married to Georgie Pittman. It list his height as tall and his build as medium with gray eyes and brown hair. James William Pittman filled out a social security application and claims form in January 1937 which listed him living with the name James William Pittman social security number 705-07-9449, male, white, born 2 September 1878 in Jonesboro, Tennessee, his father as John H Pittman and his mother as Cora Crimsuldia (Grimaldi). James was listed in the 1840 census records living in the same house at 801 East Potomac in Maryland as widowed and he had completed the 5th grade, he was living with Hilda Barker (who he later married) and her Family Carrie (68 her mom) and her son Wilfred (24 a carpenter born in Maryland). The Barker family resided at the Potomac address in the 1930 Census listing Carrie C Barker (59 West Virginia) Hilda Barker (36 West Virginia) Claude Barker (24 Maryland) Harry Barker (21 Maryland) Paul Barker (19 Maryland) and Hilda's son Wilfred Hoyle (15 Baltimore) Next I see he registered again for the World War II draft in 1942. Again it list him as James William Pittman living at 801 E Potomac Brunswick District 25 Frederick, Maryland. It has him being aged 63 born in Jonesboro, Tennessee September 2, 1878. It list Hilda Barker as a contact person living at the same address as him. It again list him working for the B & O Railroad in Baltimore, Maryland. It lists him as being white with brown eyes and gray hair and a light complexion. His obituary dated December 6, 1950 Frederick, Maryland newspaper reads James W. Pittman, 72, Spanish American war veteran and retired Baltimore & Ohio conductor, died Tuesday afternoon at Newton D Baker Hospital, Martinsburg W. Va. He resided at 801 East Potomac Street, Brunswick and was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Fraternal Order of Eagles, B & O Veterans and the Brunswick Rod and Gun Club. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hilda Barker Pittman and two sisters. The body is at the funeral home in Brunswick, where friends may call after 6 o'clock this evening. Funeral services will be held there Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Rev. Paul E Schultz will officiate. Interment will be in the Presbyterian cemetery, Maryland, C. H. Feete and Bros. funeral directors. Another newspaper article dated December 21, 1950 Frederick Maryland which shows he is the father of Naomi Poindexter, the article states "Also probated was the will of James W. Pittman late of Brunswick, which was executed July 13 1940 and witnessed by Orin J Virts and G. M. Kaetzel, Mrs. Hilda Barker, Brunswick qualified as executrix and files no valuations. The testator provides a so bequest to a daughter, Mrs. Naomi Poindexter and directs that the remainders go to Mrs. Barker Another article talking about his estate dated September 27, 1951 states "The final account of the estate of James W. Pittman was entered in orphans court yesterday by Hilda Barker executrix. The executrix distributed the $2076.66 necessary for disbursements in order to keep the real estate free from encumbrance. The property was valued at 2076.66. James William Pittman died on December 5, 1950 in Martinsburg Berkeley county West Virginia USA. On his death certificate it said he died after spending 7 days in the Veterans Administration center in Martinsburg, West Virginia. It gives a birthdate of September 2, 1878 in Tennessee, living at 801 E Potomac Brunswick, Maryland. It says he was married but no name listed and that he was a retired railroad conductor buried in Saint Marks Apostolic Church cemetery. It also says he was in the military from May 12 1898 to December 20, 1898.
