Description	:	Jan Hinderk Willemssen was born November 6 or 16, 1825 in Oldersum, Hannover, Germany to Hinderk Harm Willem Willemssen and Mareka Antoni Hassebroek. He was one of at least 10 children: Willem, Antoni, Jan, Ulfert, Etje, Etje, Frauke, Nikolas, Harm, and Hinderk. Jan and several of his brothers (Ulfert, Nikolas, Harm and Hinderk) left Germany to settle in the US. Whether they came together or separately is not known (yet), but all ended up in Iowa. Jan and several of his brothers (Ulfert, Nikolas, Harm and Hinderk) left Germany to settle in the US. Whether they came together or separately is not known (yet), but all ended up in Iowa. Jan first settled in Forreston, Ogle County, Illinois. There he married Peterke Muntinga in 1853 or 1854 and purchased 80 acres of land in 1855. Later he and Peterke and their growing family moved to Grundy County, Iowa (they also owned land in Hardin County). Some of their children were born in Illinois and some in Iowa. Together Jan and Peterke were parents to: Mareka, Harm, Wopke, Henriettje, Hinderk, Willem, Sibo, Harminas, Coba, and perhaps several additional children that died as infants. It is believed that Jan died on May 15, 1877. This is the same day his will was written, witnessed and signed. According to the East Friesland church and Grundy County Courthouse records, Jan Willemssen was buried without a marker at the East Friesland Presbyterian Church Cemetery in German Township, Grundy County, Iowa (located between Ackley and Wellsburg on the corner of B Ave and 150th St). Possible location of unmarked burials at East Friesland: north of the church where there are no markers, but no evidence other than hearsay. The church records indicate his burial but contain no plot information for Jan. Jan's last will and testament, accepted by the courts on March 18, 1878, was apparently written/revised and witnessed the same day of his death; his brothers Harm and Ulfert signed as witnesses and served as executors of his estate. In 1884 there were still some 240 acres owned by the Jan Willemssen Estate in Grundy County. After Jan's death, Peterke married the widower John Brower. Mystery: An old family photo montage taken apart in 2016 revealed a note written by grandson Herman (son of Hinderk) that stated: "Grandpa died in the war and then Grandma married Grandpa Brouwer." We are not sure what war this might have referred to because Jan died in 1877. We are also not sure of the note's accuracy, but are seeking more information. ------------------- Source of burial information obtained from both East Friesland church and the Grundy County Courthouse.
