In his will, dated 4 Aug 1760, probated 25 Nov 1760, "John Bougaert, of Pearemis," Bergen County, mentions wife Antie; oldest son Jacobus; children Abram, Cobes, Steven, Willimptie, Angenietie, Nitie; daughter's child, Cornelia Hopper. Executors named were Roelof Westervelt and Luykes Bougaert. Real and personal estate was mentioned. Witnesses were Allebartis Terhuijn, William S. Van Emburgh, Abraham Terhuijn. Maria Pratt Hopper discovered that the original will of John Bongaert at Trenton is similar though it would seem Cobus and Nitie were nicknames for Jacobus and Angenietie. Zabriskie, she said, undoubtedly used the abstracted version of David Hopper's will, wherein it states, "Daughter, Cornelia (wife of Jacobus A. Bogert), the debt I owe her." This may have been interpreted by Zabriskie as referring to her illegitimacy. However, upon examination of a copy of the original will at the Bergen County Court House, (and later the original at Trenton) the will stated: "First, the sum of thirteen pounds, ten shillings and three, which I owe my daughter Cornelia, the wife of Jacobus A. Bogert, and all my other debts ... be paid." Clearly then the debt he owed his daughter was actually money he had borrowed from her, (or part of a legacy due to her), and not in payment for her condition of birth.
