John Sloup, a resident of Butler county for 40 years, the last six years a citizen of David City, passed away in a Lincoln sanitarium Sunday morning, March 14, at 11:30 o'clock, after an illness of three weeks. Death was due to influenza following an attack of pleurisy. He was a sufferer from chronic intestinal trouble and seven years ago underwent a surgical operation. His health since then had been much improved up to the time of his fatal illness. Bohemia was the birthplace of Mr. Sloup and the date of his birth was March 12, 1850. His age at the time of his death was 70 years and 2 days. When 19 years of age he came to the United States. For several years he was in Ohio, first locating in Fremont, later going to Cleveland. Since coming to Nebraska he had engaged in farming. The first land he bought was in Franklin township, where he lived for a number of years. He then bought a farm near Bruno. Previous to his coming to David City he had made Dwight his home for seven years. He was energetic and progressive and interested in matters pertaining to the upbuilding of the community. Mr. Sloup was twice married. His first wife died in 1882. A few years later he was married to Anna Sloup. They had lived together 36 years. Besides the widow there are five children surviving, Frank Sloup of Enid, Okla., John Sloup of Ulysses and Mrs. Joseph Lajba of Abie by the former marriage, and Emil Sloup of Garrison and Mrs. James Masek of David City, by the latter marriage. Rev. Father Petrasch, of St. Mary's Catholic church, David City, conducted the funeral services, which were held at the grave in St. Mary's cemetery, David City, at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. The pallbearers were John Becak, J. C. Chamberlain, Joseph C. Havel, L. S. Hastings, Charles Novacek and I. T. McCaskey.
