Description	:	Jan was a carpenter and a personal aide to the 18 year old emperor of Austria, Emperor Franz Joseph. He was also trying to live on a five acre tract of land with his two brothers Thomas and Joseph. In 1868, John/Jan and Marie with their daughter Mary, entered the United States at New York on the ship Bark Goethe and came to Iowa. Read More	Jan was a carpenter and a personal aide to the 18 year old emperor of Austria, Emperor Franz Joseph. He was also trying to live on a five acre tract of land with his two brothers Thomas and Joseph. In 1868, John/Jan and Marie with their daughter Mary, entered the United States at New York on the ship Bark Goethe and came to Iowa. John worked at the Quarry at LeGrande, Iowa before moving west of Clutier to farm. It was common to change your name from Jan to John when arriving in the new world. After John Jr. was married, he took over the farming business. All their children married and were farming in the neighborhood. The first land purchased was 40 acres on December 27, 1869, and they settled in the hills west of Clutier. In addition to their daughter Mary were two other children; John Jr, the first Svoboda in this blood line born in the United States and another daughter, Antonia (Tena). John was instrumental in the building of St. Vaclav (Wenceslaus) Church and was one of the first trustees. John and Frances continued to farm and after son, Ben, married Anna Hala and started farming, they moved to a farm north of the home place half a mile west of St. Vaclav. Ben's son, Stanley, a fourth generation Svoboda, now lives on the home place. When John died, Frances moved to Clutier into a house just east of the Immaculate Conception Church.
