''''''''''''''''''' The Brainard Clipper (Brainard, Nebr.), November 18, 1920, p. 1, col. 5 NEBRASKA PIONEER PASSES AWAY John Osmera Sr., died at his home in Brainard on Sunday morning, Nov. 14, about five o'clock. He had been up town quite late the evening before, and shortly after returning home he suffered a stroke of cerebral apoplexy, passing away a few hours later. He was in his 74th year. John Osmera was born in Czecho-Slovakia on August 23, 1846 and grew to manhood there. He was united in marriage in 1873 to Miss Anna Zoubek, to which union was born three children: Joseph, John and Mary (now Mrs. B. Osmera). In the spring of 1882 they came to America and settled in Butler county where he engaged in farm labor for two years, during which he heard of and decided to take up some of the free homestead land in western Nebraska. Having made preparations, the Osmera family and several others left for Hayes county, a trip of 327 miles, in camp wagons drawn by oxen. One night, in order to be protected fro the wind, they camped in a valley between Indianola and Cambridge. During the night a cloudburst occurred about six miles west of this place. When awakened by the barking of their dog they discovered, to their great horror, that a great stream of water was rushing down upon them. Before they could reach a place of safety, the wagon with the sleeping women and children was carried down the stream and overturned. Most of the women and children were drowned including Mr. Osmera's wife and eldest son Joseph, but after a hard struggle he succeeded in rescuing his two children John and Mary. A collection was taken up for the immigrants in the town of Cambridge, to bury the dead. Mr. Osmera and children went on to Hayes county where they settled on a homestead. In 1886 he was married to Mary Rejda of near Brainard. To them were born nine children: Joseph, Frank living near Ulysses, Ludmila now Mrs. Otto Proskovec of Bruno, Peter who died of influenza in 1918, Charles, Rudolph, Frances, Anton and Louis. All of his children are living [in] Butler county. They lived in Hayes county until 1905, when he moved back to Brainard and retired. His wife died in 1913. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Msgr. Klein in Holy Trinity Catholic church, on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30, and the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. The seven sons acted as pall bearers. ______ We wish to thank the many relatives and friends who in any way assisted us at the death and burial of our beloved father, also for the beautiful floral wreaths.
