Athens Messenger (OH) Thursday, August 3, 1893. page 5, column 2 OBITUARY Jane Hibbard, the daughter of Michael and Isabella Barker, was born in Athens township, Athens county, Ohio, December 14, 1897. She was a member of one of the old families of Ohio. Her grandfather came to the Belpre settlement in the autumn of 1788, only about six months after the settlement of Marietta. Her father was born in 1776, and was thus 12 years old when he came to this state. During the Indian war, 1792-1795, the family lived at Belpre in the Farmers' Castle, and her father served as a scout or spy against the Indians. The ties are being ruptured one by one of this large family. There were seven sisters and two brothers, one of whom died early, and with the death of Mrs. Hibbard all have passed away excepting Mrs. E. H. Moore, who still lives among us. Almost the entire life of the deceased was passed in this county. A few years subsequent to her marriage were spent in the West. But she returned and soon after came into town, where since 1865 she has lived. She was industrious and frugal, carefully husbanding her resources, until what was first a small amount grew to a snug fortune amply sufficient to keep her in comfort. Shortly after her removal here she united with the church. She has lived a quiet, unostentatious and retired life. But, so far as I can learn, she has been true to her colors and lived as she felt she ought. In February, Mrs. Hibbard was one day stricken with what has proved to be paralysis. She must have lain for hours before being found. She was nearly frozen and her system received a shock from which she never recovered. Her one desire seemed to be to be ready. She was impressed from the first that she would not get well, and the question was, Are my passed sins all forgiven?" She would say, "If they are not; if I am not ready, I don't know it." Toward the last her trust seemed to be firmer and her hold on life to relax. She frequently said, "I do not want to live. I would rather die and be with Jesus." She delighted in Christian song. She would repeat and ask us to sing "Jesus can make a dying bed," etc., while frequently she would listen to "How firm a foundation" and "Trusting Lord in Thee."
