JOHN METCALFE An old and respected pioneer of Honeywood passed away on Thursday, March 26th, in the person of Jane Broderick, wife of John Metcalfe. Deceased, who had been making her home with her son-in-law, John A. Hambleton of Mulmur Townshop, for the past two years, died from pneumonia following the flu in her 83rd year. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Broderick and was born in Burlington, coming to Honeywood when six years old, their house being the only one there for more than five miles every direction. The nearest place to get flour was Toronto (then called Little York). Their only mode of travelling was with oxen and often had to walk. They had to follow the cattle and watch what they ate and then gather some to eat themselves. After a few years a few Yorkshire settlers came in and they called it the Torkshire block. She was married in 1862 to John Metcalfe and lived at Redickville until the fall of 1886 when they moved to Horning's Mills where they lived until two years ago, going then to make their home with their daughter, Mrs. J. A. Hambleton, Mulmur township. They celebrated their golden wedding on Nov. 18th, 1912, and diamond wedding in 1922. There are 25 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Deceased is survived by her aged husband and one brother, Gideon of Lindsay, who arrived in time to see her alive, and one son and six daughters: W. G. Metcalfe, Redickville; Mrs. Jas. Baxter, Horning's Mills; Mrs. Jas. E. Sammons, Feversham; Mrs. Thos. Long, Perm; Mrs. R. J. Baxter, Ferndale, Wash.; Mrs. H. J. Willis, Winnipeg, Man.; Mrs. J. A. Hambleton, Whitfield. The funeral was held on Saturday, March 28th, a short service being conducted at the house by Rev. Mr. Brown and a public service in the Methodist church, Horning's Mills, where Rev. Mr. Graham assisted. Interment took place in Horning's Mills cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs. Richard Armstong and Harry Mitchell, of Honeywood and Jas. H. Baxter, Wm. McLean, John Kitchen and R. H. Kitchen of Horning's Mills.
