Jane Cotnam was born in Hull, England, Sept. 7, 1809. She was married to John Beal in 1829 and the following year they removed to Canada, remaining there but a short time when they moved to Ohio and lived there about twenty-five years, and in 1870 moved to Iowa, taking up their residence at La Porte City, where they spent the remainder of their days. To this union six children were born, three of whom are living and three of whom passed to the spirit land several years ago. John Beal, the eldest child of the family, and Mrs. J.R. Stebbins are now residents of La Porte City, while Mrs. G.F. Sanford lives in Cedar Rapids. George and William Beal, deceased, served their country in the late civil war, the former now lying in West View cemetery near La Porte, while William and Henry, also deceased, sleep the sleep of the just in Ohio. John Beal, the husband and father, died in La Porte City in 1873, and the remains were laid to rest in West View cemetery. Jane Beal, the wife and mother who has just departed her life at a good old age, was loved, honored and respected by all who knew her, and but for the fact that her demise ends a long siege of intense suffering, many would be the regrets felt at her death. Several months ago she had the misfortune to fall while out in the yard, causing a fracture of one of her wrists. At the time it was thought that the fall was not serious in its results and a couple of months afterward she again met with a fall in the house upon arising from her couch. This fall resulted in an injury that required the attention of a physician and when one was called it was discovered that she had dislocated one of her hips, and upon closer examination it was found that the first fall had resulted in a broken wrist. Being so far advanced in years, nothing could be done in the way of setting these injured members with any definite prospect of permanent recovery, and the best that could be done was to take the best care possible of the aged lady until such time as she might be called to join those who had already gone before, which care was given her. Her daughters, Mrs. J.R. Stebbins and Mrs. G.F. Sanford have carefully watched over her during her last illness and in conjunction with the son, John Beal, nothing has been left undone that would conduce to comfort and happiness during her declining days. The funeral will take place from the residence of J.R. Stebbins in this city on Tuesday, at 2:00 p.m.; services by Rev. S.E. Koons of the Presbyterian church, and the remains will be laid to rest alongside of her consort of years agone, in West View cemetery.
