Jane D'Arcy, second daughter of Arthur and Sophia (Clarke) D'Arcy was born January 31, 1857, in Dubuque County, Iowa, and passed away at 10 p.m., July 22, 1936, in Mason City, Iowa, at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 22 days, after an illness of four months. In 1863 in Dubuque county she lost her mother. The following years Mr. D'Arcy with his six motherless little children, came to Spirit Lake and established a home. This homestead was a farm just west of the present location of the Catholic Church and now a residence of Spirit Lake town. For ownership of this land out of his worldly possessions, Mr. D'Arcy traded a horse to complete the transaction and began a brave fight for success for his family in Spirit Lake meager pioneer life. In his home, Jane D'Arcy spent her childhood and youth, attended the early Spirit Lake schools and at home contributed bravely with love and service to the man who was struggling to meet the needs of both father and mother to his children. Here she developed the helpful, unselfish, courageous spirit that served her all through life. In it there was no idleness. She had a keen intellect and improved it. She was though nearly 80 years of life, always informed and interested in the development of her own town, in modern invention and the progression of state and national affairs. Jane D'Arcy never established a home of her own, but was a loving, helpful member in the homes of her sisters and in the many years she followed the occupation of practical nurse, and housekeeper, endeared herself to many friends by her faithful devotion and loving service. She was a Christian woman, a member of the First Presbyterian church and Loyal Women's Bible class and a member of the Spirit Lake Rebekah lodge. During the early, trying financial years of the depression, Miss D'Arcy seen he life savings that provided comfort for her old age, swept away, and in 1934 when she felt physically unfit for the duties of active life, she entered the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City. She leaves to mourn her passing one sister, Mrs. Sara Kephart, of Spirit Lake; five nephews and three nieces, and a large number of great nieces and nephews and may friends. She fought a good fight, she finished her course, she kept faith and relied on the promise that a righteous judge shall give me at that day.
