Read More	Obituary: Piedmont Herald, published in Piedmont, West Virginia, on Friday, October 20, 1899; pg. 1 Death's Doings The announcement last Sunday morning, Oct. 15, 1899, of the death of Mrs. Jane Johnson, widow of the late Adam Johnson, the popular engineer on the Cumberland and Pennsylvania railroad for so many years, and who died June 22, 1897, was a great surprise and shock to her family and friends. Mrs. Johnson retired about nine o'clock Saturday evening apparently in her usual health and laughed and talked with members of her family. Her son, Mr. Adam Johnson, entered her room about six o'clock as she did not get up at her usual time, and at first thought she was sleeping, but soon discovered that death had come quietly during the late hours of the night and left a peaceful smile on her face. Mrs. Johnson was born in Virginia and was 56 years, 10 months, and 23 days old. She was married to Mr. Johnson in 1861 and unto them were born ten children, four of them having passed to the great beyond. Her surviving children are: Mrs. James Roberts, of Barton; Mr. Joseph Johnson, of Franklin; Mrs. Joseph Koontz, Mrs. Daniel Brady, Messrs. John and Adam Johnson, of Westernport. Also, three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Susan Lewis of Newburg, W. Va.; Mrs. James Gorman of Westernport; Mrs. Sarah Tasker, of Elk Garden; Messers. Joseph and Philip Davis of Swanton, Md. survive her. The funeral services were held in the Piedmont M. E. church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the pastor, T. M. West, officiating, assisted by Rev. H. H. Kight. By request Mr. Wm Malcolm, of Barton, sang a solo entitled "In That City." The other hymns used in the service had been selected by the deceased. Mrs. Johnson had often expressed the desire that her death might be sudden and peaceful and that she may not suffer as did her husband and her wish was granted. The floral tributes were many and pretty, among them being a sheaf of wheat, gate ajar, broken column, scholl [sic] bearing the word "Mother," anchor, etc. The interment took place by the side of her husband in Philos cemetery. Many friends and relatives from far and near came to take the last look of a kind friend, loving mother, and devoted sister, among them her sister, Mrs. Susan Lewis, son and daughter, of Newburg, W. Va., and nephew Mr. Moses Johnson, of Pittsburg, Pa. The pallbearers were: Messrs. Simon Roberts, Wesley Duckworth, P. F. White, J. S. Fazenbaker, John Sigler, Wm B. Barnard, William Malloy and George R. Coles.
