(1897-1969), Ruth (1900-1900), Isabelle (1904-1909), and Norman (1914-1915). *************************** On 06/04/2016, birth/death months, days, places and parental links were provided by graver, Linda Applegate Brown based upon the following: Native of Merced County Succumbs LE GRAND, Jan. 11, 1945 Mrs. Janie Mitchell, 75, a native of the Le Grand district, and the granddaughter of Captain Nicholas Turner who piloted three different wagon trains across the plains in the late ‘40’s and early ‘50’s, died yesterday in a Merced hospital after a long illness. Her father, Jonas Turner, came to the San Joaquin Valley in 1849, and he mother, the former Amanda Redman, arrived four years later. Mrs. Mitchell’s grandfather captained wagon trains across the plains in 1847, 1849 and 1852. He settled in this district, where his family was reared. Ms. Mitchell spent all her life in Merced County. She was born October 15, 1869, on the 360 acre ranch Nicholas Turner purchased in 1852 for $1.25 an acre and which she inherited in 1897 from her mother. She and John S. Mitchell were married in June, 1885, and lived on the home ranch until only six years ago when they sold the last parcel to H. Pettit and moved into the city of Le Grand. They celebrated their golden wedding in 1935. Three of the couple’s seven children are living, Mrs. Merle Kroh and J. W. Mitchell of Le Grand and J. H. Mitchell of Merced. Survivors, besides her husband and children, are two sisters, Mrs. Harriet Hamlett, Modesto, and Mrs. Mary Leavelle, Fresno, 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. The funeral will be tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock in the W. C. Bradford Mortuary in Merced. Burial will be in the family plot in the Turner-Helm Cemetery in Le Grand.
