Yesterday was the 102nd anniversary of her birth. She was born Jane McCumber on September 14, 1840, in Perry, New York, one of five children of Mr. and Mrs. Abner McCumber, early residents of that vicinity. Her mother, Mrs. Curtis told friends, was the first white child born in Perry. She grew up in New York state, and when she was 18 was married to Dexter Curtis. To this union eleven children were born, six of whom are still alive. After her husband returned from serving with the Union army in the Civil war, the family moved to Kansas and settled in the Geneva neighborhood in 1869. They resided there until Mr Curtis' death in 1924, and since then Mrs. Curtis has made her home most of the time with her daughter, Mrs. Wight. At the age of 13 Mrs. Curtis joined the Methodist church, and when she came to Kansas she placed her letter with the old Congregational church at Geneva. She often said that her recipe of a long and happy life was temperance in all things and faith in the Lord. Much of the pleasure of her life was found in travelling with her husband, and their trips included visits to both the west and the east coasts of the country. She was quite active until only a few years ago, and even after she passed the 100-year mark she loved to visit with friends and talk of her many experiences in a long and full life. She kept up with the news of the day remarkably well for one of her advanced years, and had been an admirer of The Register ever since it was founded. She is survived by six children. These are: L. M. Curtis of Iola; Albert Curtis of Los Angeles; Fred Curtis of Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. Grace McQuigg of Los Angeles; Mrs. H. C. Sell, Geneva; and Mrs. Wight. A host of other relatives are left to mourn her death. Dr. Mildred Curtis of Iola is a niece. Funeral arrangements await word from relatives on the west coast, and will be announced later. The Iola Register Thursday Evening, September 17, 1942 p1 col 8 Funeral Tomorrow For Mrs. Curtis Funeral services for Mrs. Jane Curtis, 102, who, until her death Tuesday, was Allen county's oldest citizen, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 at the Waugh Funeral home. Besides her six living children, Mrs. Curtis leaves 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren. The Rev. Stanley Taylor, pastor of the Baptist church here, will be in charge of the services, and burial will be in Geneva cemetery.
