Read More	Jane Woodman Chapin, 98 BATH - Jane Woodman Chapin, 98, died on Nov. 2, 2015, surrounded by her family. She was born on June 9, 1917. in Westbrook, the daughter of Dr. George M. Woodman and Caroline Johnson Woodman. She attended schools in Westbrook and graduated from Westbrook High School with the class of 1934. She attended Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., graduating with honors in history in 1938. She was president of her class in 1937 and 1938. After graduation Jane became an apprentice teacher at the Rivers School in Brookline, Mass., and later at the Shady Hill School in Cambridge. She was a tutor at Camp Chewonki in Wiscasset, during the summers of 1940 and '41, and it was there that she met her husband. In September 1945, she married Edward Barton Chapin, Jr., son of Edward Barton Chapin and Jeannette Thomas Chapin of Andover, Mass. Jane and her husband both taught at Shady Hill School, later moving to Buffalo, N.Y., where Mr. Chapin taught English and later became headmaster of the Park School there. The quintessential matriarch, Jane was devoted to her family and delighted in being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. After retiring from the Park School, the couple lived in Westbrook, briefly, and then in Bath. Jane moved to the Highlands in Topsham after the death of her husband in January 1998, and then to HillHouse in Bath for the last years of her life. She leaves behind her three children, E. Barton III (Lucy Hull), Catherine G. Chapin-Kobacker (John Kobacker), and Thomas M. (Geeta Badkar); grandchildren Margaret H. Chapin and Miles W. Chapin (Kyra), James M. Kobacker (Denae), Augustine J.S. Chapin (Bradley Cummins), Morelia R.B. Chapin and Satish T.M. Chapin; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; and her brothers Dr. Charles B. Woodman, George M. Woodman, Jr., and Paul J. Woodman. Generous to the core, Jane supported numerous organizations and volunteered for many causes. Her activities included work on the board of Sagadahoc Preservation, Patten Free Library, and the Bath Hospital Auxiliary. Jane was a member of the congregation of Grace Episcopal Church in Bath, where she was a Lay Eucharistic Minister, lector and chalice bearer. She was a member of the Companions of the Holy Cross of Byfield, Mass., and Sagadahoc Preservation, and a Corporator of the Patten Free Library and the Mid Coast Hospital Auxiliary. Jane had wonderful memories of growing up in Westbrook. A relative introduced her to Thomas Edison, and because he was hard of hearing she wrote him a note, which he appreciated enough to sign it. Rudy Vallée was a family friend. Jane was ten when Charles Lindbergh made his unexpected landing on Old Orchard Beach and she went with her family to see the Spirit of St. Louis. The family gives heartfelt thanks to the staff of HillHouse for the excellent care they provided throughout her stay, and to her devoted friend Ann Lewis. A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Bath on Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, at 11 a.m. Arrangements are by Daigle Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath.
