She passed peacefully at home in the care of family and Wesley Hospice after years of struggling with coronary artery disease. A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday May 17, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Memorial Lutheran Church with burial in Ames Municipal Cemetery. Jan was born to Wayne and Alice (Scott) Higgs on June 18, 1931, in Des Moines, the youngest of six children. She was raised in and graduated from high school in Nevada and attended what is now known as University of Northern Iowa. On Nov. 11, 1951, Jan married Harriss Barry Thomas. With the exception of seven years, she and Barry lived their entire married life in Ames. She worked at the Iowa DOT, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Jostens and Ames Public Schools. Her passions included family, maintaining high school friendships, spending summers at Okoboji, dedicating time to the needs of students at Iowa State University through Memorial Lutheran Church, and regular social gatherings of the "After The Game Group." The medical issues she faced from age 47 on convinced her that she would not live to see grandchildren, but her faith, will and fortitude allowed her to see, know and enjoy great-grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Barry; two sons, Chandler (Deb) Thomas, of Lakeville, Minn., and Kyle (Patricia) Thomas, of Lansing, New York; one brother, Hal; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Bernadine; three brothers, Don, Marion and Jim; and one great-grandson, Lincoln.
