Description	:	BOMOSEEN - Janet H. Brown, a longtime resident of the west shore of Lake Bomoseen, passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord on Monday, May 27, 2013. She was born in West Rutland, Vt., on March 17, in the middle of a late-winter blizzard. In her youth, she attended West Rutland Elementary and High School, graduating third in her H.S. class. Her summer job was on the... Read More	BOMOSEEN - Janet H. Brown, a longtime resident of the west shore of Lake Bomoseen, passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord on Monday, May 27, 2013. She was born in West Rutland, Vt., on March 17, in the middle of a late-winter blizzard. In her youth, she attended West Rutland Elementary and High School, graduating third in her H.S. class. She learned the arts of gardening, preserving, sewing, cooking and the joys of home life from her mother, who was born in Finland, on the home farm on Boardman Hill, West Rutland. Her summer job was on the Hinckley Farm in Hubbardton, helping her father mow and store hay with the draft horse team. Janet earned her secondary education at Castleton Teacher's College, now Castleton State College, and taught third grade in Arlington and Bennington, Vt., and Schnectady, N.Y., prior to her marriage to Mortimer B. Brown of Castleton, Vt. Together, in a loving home, they raised four children. She was active in the endeavors of her children, from PTA to 4H to church-related activities. Our mother was a gracious hostess and derived a lot of pleasure from her Christian faith. She attended and sang in the United Church of West Rutland in her youth, and later was a choir member, deaconess and trustee at the Hydeville Baptist Church in Hydeville, Vt. She learned to play the piano as an adult and also played the organ; she attempted to make pianists of her two daughters, one successfully and one not. Janet was a member of the Hydeville Workers, the ladies group of the church. She spearheaded many church suppers, bake sales, cookbooks and other projects. She had many dear friends in this group, and they are reunited now in Paradise. It is our belief that our mother is in a better place and her legacy of a faith-based life and solid work ethic will endure. Survivors include four children: Janet Lynn (Brown) Book of North Clarendon, Vt.; Melody Beth Brown and husband Paul Limmer of Sudbury, Vt.; Steven R. and wife Mary (Bird) Brown of Castleton; and Christopher B. and wife Andrea (Sayers) Brown of Castleton. Also, seven grandchildren: Bretany Lynn (Book) Thibault and husband Matthew of Westbrook, Maine; Jason D. Book of Rutland, Vt.; Jana M. Brown and husband Patrick Bender of Burlington, Vt.; Natalie G. Brown of Hampton, N.Y.; Calley (Brown) Hewes and husband Garret of Bristol, Vt.; Lindsay E. Brown and Steven Daniel Brown, both of Castleton, Vt. Janet is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Parker John Thibault, Skyler Isabelle Book, Paisley Rose Fiorino, and Finn Patrick Brown Bender; and four nephews, Howard E. Hinckley Jr. of West Rutland, David, Don and Phillip Briddell of Pennsylvannia and Maryland. She was predeceased by her husband, Mortimer, in 1976; her parents, Harry C. and Anna (Alin) Hinckley; her two brothers, Harry Frederick and Howard Sr.; and two sisters, Alene and Anna Ruth. The Brown family would like to extend special thanks to the caregivers for the last nine months, who enabled our mother to stay in her home until the Lord called her: Connie Caballero of Fair Haven, Flo Smith of Rutland Town, and June Flynn of Benson. There will be no calling hours. Memorial service will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Durfee Funeral Home, Main Street, Fair Haven, Vt.
