Description	:	Janet L. Brown, 90, of Gering, passed away peacefully the morning of October 28, 2016. She was born on February 19, 1926 to Ivan and Maude Pickrell of Mitchell, Nebraska. Janet married Harlan Brown on April 8, 1947. Janet and Harlan’s 67-year marriage was blessed with 3 children: Mavis Davis, Robert Brown, and Peggy Jo Wells. Janet devoted herself to being the best farmwife and mother possible. She supported her husband in all of his many endeavors, from farming to starting a yarn manufacturing mill: Brown Sheep Company. She was born on February 19, 1926 to Ivan and Maude Pickrell of Mitchell, Nebraska. Janet married Harlan Brown on April 8, 1947. Janet and Harlan’s 67-year marriage was blessed with 3 children: Mavis Davis, Robert Brown, and Peggy Jo Wells. Janet devoted herself to being the best farmwife and mother possible. She supported her husband in all of his many endeavors, from farming to starting a yarn manufacturing mill: Brown Sheep Company. When Harlan decided to start a world-class spinning mill, it was Janet who guided him behind the scenes with her knowledge of color, texture, and fashion. Janet’s important role in supporting Brown Sheep Company came naturally to her as she had spent over 30 years promoting both the 4-H program and the ‘Make it Yourself with Wool’ contest. She served as an influential 4-H leader in the Mitchell Valley community from 1949 until 1972. During this time she taught many girls how to sew and construct clothing—giving them the gift of skills and knowledge, as well as a love for sewing that would last a lifetime. Later she was also the district and state director of the ‘Make it Yourself with Wool’ contest, further encouraging and facilitating young sewers to develop a love for wool and natural fibers. Janet is survived by: her three children; six grandchildren, Amanda, Andrew, Sara, Phillip, Erica, and Amy; and 12 great-grandchildren. Janet was preceded in death by: her husband, Harlan Brown; and brothers, Harold and Donald Pickrell. Funeral service on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Jones Mortuary in Mitchell. Interment will follow at Mitchell Valley Cemetery. Obituary information from Jolliffe Funeral Home of Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
