Garrett, Sr., passed peacefully from this life on January 26, 2015. Born on December 3, 1926 in the White Plains Community, she was the youngest of five children to the late William Harper and Emmie Pack Stone. As a young girl, she worked alongside her family picking cotton and attended Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith, of which her father was a founding member. In 1946, she married her U.S. Navy sweetheart, George, and soon after started a family of their own, raising two sons in the home they built together. Always good with names and numbers, she provided tax assistance to community members since 1976 and was the owner/operator of Garrett Tax Service until she retired at the age of 75. When she wasn’t working, Janice enjoyed trips to the Smoky Mountains, especially for Ruby mining! She loved bragging about the “fresh air” and “red dirt” of South Carolina and for years tended an increasingly large fruit and vegetable garden, of which she delighted in trading produce with friends and family. With the promise of a fresh watermelon under a shade tree, Janice always found a way of recruiting little helpers for the garden when her grandchildren were over for a visit. An avid sports fan, it was not uncommon for Janice to watch three different games at once on three separate TV screens in the living room; she was always rooting for her beloved Orioles. When she wasn’t watching sports, the only other program you’d catch her watching was “Days of Our Lives”. All the while, she’d likely be working through a crossword puzzle. In later years, she found a life of comfort and friends at Summit Place in Anderson. Janice is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, George H. Garrett, Sr. and by sisters, Willie S. Smith and Ruby S. Kay; brothers, John H. Stone and Harper DeWitt Stone. Janice is survived by their two sons, George H. Garrett, Jr. and his wife, Wendy of Dickinson, Texas, W. Kenneth Garrett and his wife, Sharon of Pelzer. She is also survived by five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and numerous extended family members and friends. Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Guthrie Grove Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the church with burial in the church cemetery.
