The Index-Journal (Greenwood, South Carolina) · Sat, Aug 11, 1945 (from the Saturday series “Our Old Roads”) Janie Amanda Smith (Jan 6, 1860-Apr 13, 1902), daughter of W Joel Smith (FAG 85085377) and Ione Allen Smith (FAG 90665163), married June 6, 1882, her third cousin, Amos Buckley Morse, the grandson of Lucy Smith Teague White (daughter of William Smith and Lucy Wright Smith) and Dr Isaac G Teague. Amos Buckley was born in Anderson, Mar 8, 1885 and died in Abbeville, Nov 29, 1928. The father of Amos Buckley Morse was the Rev Albert A Morse, a native of Rahway, New Jersey, who came south some twenty years before the War Between the States. He located first in Columbia where he began a business career. He later entered the South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) and was graduated with first honor in the Class of 1846. He was valedictorian of his class and the salutatorian was Edward L Patton, long a distinguished member of the faculty of Erskine. The Rev A A Morse became a Presbyterian minister in South Carolina and for some years was also a teacher. He died in 1894. He was a chaplain in the Confederate army. An interesting story is told of his experiences after he and other Confederates had been captured by Union forces. The Rev Mr Morse was sent to a Federal prison near Chicago. Because of his Northern accent, his captors believed him to be a deserter from the Northern armies and decided he should be hanged. It took considerable work to convince them that he was a long time resident of the South and in legitimate service. Amos Buckley Morse and his wife, Janie Amanda Smith Morse, had the following 5 children: 1 – Joel Smith Morse 2 – Oney Morse, twin 3 – Cara Morse, twin 4 – Mamie Lou Morse 5 – Albert Augustus Morse married Mary Perrin of Abbeville Joel Smith Morse is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Thornwell Orphanage in Clinton, an Elder of the Presbyterian Church of Abbeville, former moderator of the South Carolina Presbytery, a graduate of Davidson College, member for several terms of Abbeville City Council; Secretary of the Abbeville Building and Loan Association and has serve as President of the South Carolina Building and Loan Association.
