Janie Vandelia Hollingsworth was born on Aug. 2, 1909 to Abner and Nannie Bell (Hooe) Pipkin at Bend, TX. The Pipkin family resided in Lampasas, TX until Janie was five years old. From Lampasas, the family moved, by way of rented boxcar, to Eastern Washington, settling up the Nahahum Canyon in Cashmere. Janie attended and graduated from Cashmere High School in 1929. She and her sisters played basketball on the girls athletic team. In 1929 Janie met and fell in love with a handsome accordion player cowboy, named George W. Hollingsworth, but called "Slim" by all who knew him and on June 30, 1929, they were married in Chelan County. They had two children, Billy and Jackie respectively. Together they built a life for their family. For years, they worked Civil Service for the U.S. Forest Service, until starting a business of their own--the Icicle Island Camp and High Mountain Packers. The Icicle Island Camp was the family passion and all the Hollingsworths worked the mountain trails of the Icicle Valley near Leavenworth. During the 1960s Janie lost her son and husband to unrelated illnesses. Forced to liquidate most of the family assets and let Icicle Island Camp go, Janie began packing in the fruit sheds, where she remained employed until around the age of 72. She remained active in community activities and was a Gold Sheaf Member of the Chumstick Grange #819; Bavarian Volksmarchers; Cascade Garden Club and always a volunteer for the Red Cross blood drives. Janie lived at home alone until age 88, when her great-granddaughter, Erika Schnell, moved in with her to provide assistance, where she stayed with her until Slim arrived to take Janie home. Janie has touched so many lives and is loved by so many people, it doesn't seem like she has left. She will live on in local folklore and in the hearts of those who knew her for generations to come. She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Jackie and Dave Peake of Mena, AR; two sisters, Mildred Walchley of Wisdom, MT and Sadie Gott of Marysville; brother, Jim Pipkin, Meeteese, WY; three grandsons, Jim Schnell of Mena, AR; Randy Schnell of Duvall, and Clint Hollingsworth of North Bend; granddaughter, Kayla Peake of Austin, TX; five great-granddaughters, Erika Schnell, Jackie Schnell, Virtue, Cupid and Aura Peake; five great-grandsons, Erik and James Schnell and Tony, John and Will Peake; one great-great-granddaughter, Riley Schnell and one great-great-grandson, Heath Mason Schnell. She was preceded in death by her husband Slim in 1966, son, Billy in 1962, two grandsons, Roy Hollingsworth in 1957 and Jack A. Schnell in 1981. A service of remembrance to commemorate the life of Janie Vandelia Hollingsworth will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 17, 1999 at the gravesite in the Mt. View Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Research; Cancer Fund or the Pulmonary Dept. of the Wenatchee Valley Clinic. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
