Born February 9, 1919, in Cole Camp, Missouri, Janis enjoyed 95 years experiencing the joys of her journey. At a very young age her family moved to Prosser, WA, from Missouri where they spent a short time before relocating to Ellensburg in 1926. Janis graduated from Ellensburg High School and shortly after married Louis Bender. Janis and Lewis had two children, Donna Lou (Bender) Tharp and J. B. (Bender) Mullen, but unfortunately the marriage ended. She remarried a few years later to Elmer Hinkle and moved to Benton City (Roza) where they farmed until moving back to Ellensburg in 1956. Janis enjoyed working in the food service industry where she worked at Websters Cafe, prepared banquets at the Highway Grill, and cooked for the Ellensburg School District where she finally retired. Janis lost Elmer in 1973, who was involved in a tragic accident and then her daughter Donna Lou in 2002. Janis surrounded herself with friends and enjoyed cooking and baking. Food was the center of Janis' life, she spent many hours preparing something delicious to share with family or a friend during one of their many visits. She also enjoyed embroidery, shopping, and especially dining out. Janis became ill with throat cancer and lost the use of her vocal cords. She had to use a microphone she held to her throat, this was a little scary for some of the youngsters who knew her. So Janis, wanting to ease their worries, would lower her head a bit to hide the microphone the best she could and would try to make them laugh. The children nicknamed her "The Robot Lady" and Janis played it up with a smile. Janis was proceeded in death by her parents, Leon and Hazel; her husband, Elmer Hinkle; daughter, Donna Lou Tharp; and sister, Helen McKinstry. Janis is survived by her daughter J. B. Mullen; her loving grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, cousins and friends. I walked into her front room where she slept for over 20 years in her hospital bed, the room looks so empty. When you would say go she had her coat and purse ready, mom enjoyed getting to go out in town, visiting with people, yard sales, shopping and cooking and family. In the past year she was diagnosed with kidney failure and leukemia. Years ago she had throat cancer which took away her ability to speak without her microphone and later could not eat and lived mainly on Ensure. She was a determined lady and did her best with all her health problems Mom had three wishes; First, to pass in her own home, Hospice and friends of Hospice were called in for medical care and equipment. Years ago they helped her so this was the second time. She also needed 24 hour home assistance so I left my home 5 days a week to be with her until she passed. Her Second wish, that there be no funeral services. And finally her Third wish, when she got to heaven she could eat again and have her Chinese food. Mom, I hope you had your three wishes come through. At the request of Janis Hinkle there will not be a service conducted. She has asked to be laid to rest next to her husband Elmer Hinkle at High Valley Cemetery in Ellensburg peacefully. See you again, J. B. Contributions can be made to Hospice Friends.
