Born Feb. 18, 1917, in Winona, Minn., he was the son of the late John Malcolm and Vivian Jarrett Wood. Read More	ALDERSON -- Jarrett M. Wood, 81, formerly of Pikeville, Ky. and Ashland, Ky., died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999 in a Fairlea hospital following a long illness. Born Feb. 18, 1917, in Winona, Minn., he was the son of the late John Malcolm and Vivian Jarrett Wood. Mr. Wood moved to Alderson in 1928, where he completed his secondary education and was a 1933 graduate of Alderson High School. He attended West Virginia University, was employed in the engineering department of West Virginia Department of Highways prior to World War II. He entered the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942 as a private and, after attending Officers Training School, received the rank of major. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the Airborne Aviation Engineers in the China-Burma-India Theater of War. He returned to the United States in January 1946. In the fall of 1946, he moved to Pikeville, where he began his career with the Kentucky Power Company, as an instrument man in the engineering department and after earning promotions he became division manager, retiring in 1978. Mr. Wood served as President of the Lonesome Pine Council, Boy Scouts of America, and was a representative to the National Council, having received the Silver Beaver Award. He served as President of the Pikeville Rotary Club, Board of Directors of the Kentucky Independent College Foundation, President of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, Director of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Vice-Chairman of Mayo State Vocational School, Advisory Council, Chairman of the Economic Development Task Force of the Pikeville Model Cities Program, Board of Directors of the Pikeville Methodist Hospital, Kentucky Vice-Chairman of the American Red Cross Fund Campaign, and Board member of the Mental Health Association. He served on the Board of Trustees of Pikeville College for 22 years and as Chairman of the Board from 1973 to 1977, and in 1980, was the recipient of an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from the college. Mr. Wood was active in the Pikeville Presbyterian Church, having served as a ruling elder and teaching in the church school. After retiring in 1978, he returned to Alderson, where he continued to serve in the Alderson Presbyterian Church as ruling elder, teacher, and director of Vacation Bible Schools. He was a member of the Prison Fellowship for many years and participated in visitation, Bible study, and Seminars in the Federal Reformatory for Women at Alderson. He became the first volunteer director and served for more than eight years for the Alderson Food Pantry, until his health forced him to resign. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jarrett M. Wood III. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Bryant Wood; a son, Jarrett M. Wood Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Risner, of Paintsville, Ky.; an ex-daughter-in-law, Sabra Patton Wood of Pikeville, Ky.; a sister, Virginia Wood McLaughlin of Alderson; a granddaughter, Kathryn Wood Compton and her husband, Gregory, of Berea, Ky.; a grandson, Charles Christopher Wood of Lexington, Ky.; a great-granddaughter, Haley Lynn Compton of Berea; and several nieces and nephews. Following cremation, graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Gwinn Memorial Cemetery, Alderson, with the Revs. Stewart McMurray and BillyReed Wickline officiating. Burial will follow in the Gwinn Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the home of Dorothy B. Wood, 101 Webster St., Alderson.
