Description	:	On Sunday evening, July 11, 1897, Bert Pensal (or Pencil), a stepson of Alexander Siegel, was seized with a cramp while swimming in Bonnie Lake (2 miles north of Rock Lake and four miles from Pine City). His half-brother John Siegel made repeated attempts to save him, but finally became exhausted and was compelled to leave him. In the meantime, George Crutcher, summoned help. The funeral occurred at Pine City on the following Tuesday. Two of his companions succeeded in getting him within 20 feet of the shore, when, becoming exhausted, they had to leave him and he sank. Help was summoned but nothing could be done until morning. The body was found in four feet of water. Siegel's mother is dead and his father is serving time at Walla Walla.
