Jason Lewis was born at North Lewisburg, Champaign county, Ohio, on the 29th day of 4th month. 1845. In the fall of 1853, his parents removed to West Branch, Cedar county, Iowa, where he lived till the spring of 1865, when, with most of the family, he removed to Story county. It was here that he became more especially interested in his soul's salvation and was brought to a knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus. He was concerned, ever after, to live a consistent Christian life, and possessing naturally an amiable disposition he won the confidence and esteem of all with whom he mingled. In the fall of 1866 he came to Muscatine, and attended the High School. The following winter he taught school in District No. 8, Sweetland Township, and also the next winter in Candee district, on the Island. He was faithful as a teacher, and beloved by his pupils. He learned telegraphing at Keokuk Commercial college; spent the summer of 1868 in the city office in Muscatine and went in the fall to DeSoto, as operator on the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, where he remained about nine months, When he took charge of Downey Station as agent. He filled this position for about a year and a half, when, his health failing, he came to his father's, in Muscatine, where he remained till the summer of 1871, when he took charge of Shelby Station about sixteen months. In the fall of 1872 he went to Colorado spending two years and eight months in and about Denver. The pulmonary disease he had made him return to his home in Muscatine for his last days. All that loving hearts could suggest and loving hands perform was done for his comfort, until at 8 o'clock on the evening of the 3d inst, without a struggle he closed his eyes in death. The funeral took place on the 7th inst at Friends' meeting house, at Bloomington, and was largely attended by sympathizing friends.
