Mitchell, Young Farmer Near Humeston, Struck by Lightning and Killed Instantly J.K. Mitchell, aged 22 years, a farmer residing five miles northeast of Humeston, was struck by lightning and killed instantly during the electrical storm about five o'clock last Wednesday afternoon. The young man was at work in the field and was standing on a grain drill when the fatal accident occurred. The bolt of lightning struck him on the left side of the top of the head, and death was instantaneous. The skin on the body was not torn and there was only slight discoloration. Mr. Mitchell and his father-in-law, W.E. Rumble, were at work in the latter's field when the storm came up. They were about the middle of the field and there were no trees to draw the lightning. Mr. Rumble, who was nearby, saw the boy when he fell to the ground. Dr. H.T. Smith of Humeston was called. Mr. Mitchell was a son of Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Mitchell of Humeston. He had been married about a year. He was a kind hearted, generous young man and an enterprizing farmer, and the news of his death Wednesday evening was a severe shock to his relatives and friends. The funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Cambria on Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J.H. Perry. Burial was made at the Cambria cemetery. The following was read at the funeral services; J.K. Mitchell, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Mitchell of Humeston, was born November 30, 1890, and died on September 24, 1913, aged 22 years, ten months and 24 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Wayne Rumble on September 11, 1912. Their wedded life was very short but exceedingly happy. He was converted and baptized in early manhood at the Cambria Baptist church. He was an industrious young man and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. He is survived by a wife, father, mother, three brothers, five sisters, many relatives, and a host of friends. One sister preceded him to the better land. He was in the best of health and highest spirits. He kissed his young wife goodbye and went to work in the afternoon singing. He expected, of course, to return in the evening to their happy home, as usual, but death came suddenly.
