"Jerry" James, son of Irvin Oscar and Myrtle Doris (Nies) James, was born March 27, 1930, in Seattle, Washington. Jay passed away Monday, January 6, 2014, at Prairieview Assisted Living, Tilden, Nebraska. Jay attended and graduated from Tilden High School in Tilden, Nebraska, with the Class of 1948. In December of 1948, he entered the United States Navy, serving one year in submarine service. In 1952, Jay was called to serve one and a half years in Korea, serving on the destroyer escort as a Radar Man. In 1957, after completing his military service, Jay graduated from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry. On January 25, 1958, he married Joyce Hoffmann of Battle Creek, Nebraska, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Rapid City, Nebraska. Jay was employed by the U.S. Forest Service for 16 years, serving as Assistant Ranger and Ranger in the Black Hills National Forest and the Gunnison National Forest. In 1974, he started an apple orchard business in Hotchkiss, Colorado. During this same time, he also was a postal employee and underground coal miner. Upon retirement from the orchard business, Jay and Joyce moved to Tilden, Nebraska in the fall of 1998. Jay was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Tilden, Nebraska, and was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7603, Tilden, Nebraska. Jay was preceded in death by: parents. Funeral services for Jay M. "Jerry" James, were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2014, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Tilden, Nebraska. Reverend Michael Awe officiated. Burial was in Tilden City Cemetery, Tilden, Nebraska. Military Honors was conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7603 and American Legion Post 170, Tilden, Nebraska.
