Somewhat appropriately for his frustrated wish to visit Alaska, Mr. Garrison's death came on a blustry, snowy winter's night. For 20 years, Mr. Garrison was a familiar figure at the parking lot of Harrisonburg Loan and Thrift and later at Spotswood Bank, where the bank was acquired by United Virginia. He also was a source of an endless supply of American flags, which he sold for the American Legion, and ballpoint pens. He once said that Virginia Legion officials had told him he had sold more flags than anyone else in the state. Mr. Garrison served in the Army during World War II and was an ardent legionnaire. He served three times as commander of Post 27 and attended 32 National conventions, 27 as a delegate or alternate. In addition to his love of travel and the American Legion, he was a fan of big band music and liked to tell of collecting autographs of many of his major band leaders. His father was pastor of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ in Harrisonburg for 55 years. Survivors include his wife, the former Harryette Jones, whom he married while stationed at Augusta, Ga., in World War II.
