John Baptiste Brouillette was born in Quebec, Canada, September 17, 1843, where he grew to manhood and was educated in a Canadian college near the city of Montreal. After completing his education there he decided to come to the 'States'. He first came to New York City and from there went to Washington via the Panama Canal, where he spent nine years in the Oregon and Washington territories, clerking in a store and mining part of the time. There he learned to speak fluently the English language and after a short visit to his home he came to Union County, S.D. and settled in the village of Jefferson. This was in 1869 and he was one of the first men to put up a store here. This store he stocked and operated for about six months, when he sold-out and moved to a farm in Section 26, Jefferson township, which he improved and lived on for a year. After he disposed of his farm he moved to Sioux City, where he worked for three years and then returned to Jefferson and engaged in the store business again, which he continued up to his death. Mr. Brouillette was united in marriage in 1869 to Alexina Beauchemin, a native of Canada born in 1851. They were the parents of eight children, Wilfred, Ida, Ernest, Marie Louise, Arthur, Alice, Celina and Yvonne. Mrs. Brouillette died August 29, 1895 after over twenty-fie years of happy married life. Mr. Brouillette has been considerably interested in the growth of and development of the village of Jefferson, and has industriously labored to bring it to its present prosperous condition. He gave a hearty support to all worthy enterprises that help to further the public good and has been honored by his fellow townsmen by being elected to several offices in the gift of the people. He was a member of the first legislature of the state of South Dakota, served as county commissioner one term and was school director several terms. He was a man unusually devoted to his family circle. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to his seven children who survive him. The funeral was held Thursday morning, at 10 o'clock, in St. Peter's Catholic church and was attended by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends. The pall bearers were Phillip Beauchemin, M. and W. Chaussee, Charles Bernard, M. Brouillette and John Collins."
