Jean was raised on her family's working farm in Montrose, a small town in McCook County, South Dakota. She relocated at the age of 17 to Santa Ana, CA completing high school and then graduating with an AA at Santa Ana Junior College. She then attended The Bishop Johnson College of Nursing at The Hospital of the Good Samaritan in Los Angeles, CA where she completed her nursing studies. Jean enjoyed a fulfilling career as a Registered Nurse practicing in Boston, New York, Cleveland, San Francisco, Oakland, in San Jose at O'Connor Hospital and later, after raising her two sons, at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara. She then performed as a private care nurse for others, then later for her father and most recently for her husband. At an early age, Jean began playing violin. Over the years, she studied both classical violin and bluegrass fiddle music. Jean also learned acoustic guitar and electric bass - her love of music continued throughout her life. She played classical violin at many venues including Carnegie Hall, locally with the Metropolitan String Orchestra and the Hewlett Packard Symphony Orchestra. Over the past 30 years Jean performed regularly with a small local bluegrass group entitled the "Bees Knees", where she donated her time playing fiddle in the band at local nursing homes and senior facilities. She participated in various local music jams, including those held by The Santa Clara Valley Fiddlers Association. Jean also enjoyed classes and jams at Country Roads Folk Music Camp at Mt. Madonna for over 20 years. Jean took great pride in her home and caring for her family. As a mother, she encouraged her sons to learn musical instruments, read, study and work hard, enjoy life and to serve others. As a homemaker, she was an exceptional baker, avid cook, and also enjoyed sewing, plus a variety of arts and crafts projects. Jean's other interests included square dancing, learning and speaking Spanish, gardening, going to garage sales, walking and spending time with family and friends. Later in life she learned computer skills, surfed the net, and communicated with family and friends via email. Jean was a very special person who touched the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She will be deeply missed. A Memorial will be held at West Valley Presbyterian Church, 6191 Bollinger Road in Cupertino, CA on Friday, Oct 21 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the ALSA (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association) Bay Area Chapter would be appreciated.
