Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday October 23, 2010 at 2 PM at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Scottsbluff with Father Vince Parsons celebrating. Inurnment will take place at a later date at St. Michael's Cemetery in Albion, NE. There will be no visitation. Jolliffe Funeral Home is assisting Jean's family with arrangements. Jean was born in 1933 to a single mother who gave her the gift of adoption. She was adopted by Raymond and Lucille Shaffer along with her brother Richard. Jean's mother passed away when she was only 12 leaving her to care for her father and brother. It was this early education in the value of caring for others that made Jean what she was at the time of her death, a woman who would give anything she had to someone in need, who didn't know a stranger and was a lifelong advocate for volunteering to her church and community. In 1956 Jean graduated from St. Catherine's School of Nursing in Omaha and moved to Albion to make her first nursing position. It was there that she gave a shot to a handsome Jerry Redler, the rest shall we say, is history. They were married in 1960. Together they moved around the US for Jerry's work and raised four children. Along with her nursing career, Jean's kids became her passion. She was a fabulous mother and friend to her son and three daughters. Jean had a zest for life that was reflected in many activities she took part in. Jean enjoyed bowling, was a den mother for Girl Scouts and even played on a football team for women! She was a ringleader for tree house building and pinecone fights in the woods behind their house. She came to life on the weekends when the family went to their cabin on Herron Island where she loved to walk on the beach, go clam digging and surround herself with people she loved. Later in life Jean enjoyed spending time with friends swimming at the Spasharena, fellowshipping at the Senior Center, and spending time with grandkids. She was passionate about gardening throughout her life, especially enjoying the harvest. Jean has given so much of herself her whole life. She spent her marriage caring for her husband Jerry, who was handicapped with Cerebral Palsy, who passed away in May. In the last years she volunteered at RWMC breast health clinic, and gave time to her church through Catholic Daughters. Jean would give her last moment and last dime to the person who needed it. She looked for people who needed a friend and gave herself willingly; not because society said it was right, but because that's just who she was. Jean's father lived until 1988. Out of respect for him as a great father she never mentioned her birth family. After his death Jean made the decision to find her birth mom. She found Pauline Davis before her death, an answer to prayer for Pauline who had spent her life looking for Jean. She also was reunited with a half sister Karen and delighted in having a sister. Jean is survived by four children, David Redler of Nampa, Idaho; Patty (Daryl) Brisco of Scottsbluff; Jacque (Sam) Schuler of Catula, Georgia and Evie (Jim) Griswold of Caldwell, Idaho. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Joshua Redler, Delani Brisco (Kris Steinwart), Sydney and Allie Brisco, Kaleb and Maria Schuler, and Madison, Emmalie and Nate Griswold. She also is survived by two Great-Grandchildren Miles and Hailey Steinwart. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, her adoptive parents, her biological parents, her brother Richard and infant daughter Michelle. Her family will miss her spirit, her silly antics and most of all, her great hugs.
