Description	:	Jean Margaret Urie Borland, a lifetime resident of West Glover, died at North Country Hospital in Newport on August 8, 2019 with loved ones at her side. Jean, the second of five children born to Foster Urie and Bessie Stone, was born on August 10, 1926. She was born and raised on the same farm her grandfather had built at the top of Beach Hill. It was the final year... Read More	Jean Margaret Urie Borland, a lifetime resident of West Glover, died at North Country Hospital in Newport on August 8, 2019 with loved ones at her side. Jean, the second of five children born to Foster Urie and Bessie Stone, was born on August 10, 1926. She was born and raised on the same farm her grandfather had built at the top of Beach Hill. After graduation from Craftsbury Academy in 1944, Jean attended Vermont Junior College in Montpelier. She taught at the Andersonville School on a war-time certificate for one year. It was the final year of operation for this one room schoolhouse in Glover and one she had attended as a student herself. Jean married Alden Borland on April 18, 1947 in Barton, Vermont. They had five children: Kenneth, Harriet, Barbara, Carolyn and Roberta. They farmed the Maple View Farm which had been in the Borland family for generations. After their son, Kenneth and his wife Carol, took over the farm, Jean and Alden moved just up the road to the Pine Shade Farm which had been owned by Harry A. Phillips. After Alden died in 1992, Jean continued to live at Pine Shade Farm until 2002 when she moved to a new home overlooking the Borland Road farms. Jean is survived by her sister, Rachel Urie Lafont, of Newport, VT and was predeceased by her parents, her brother James (Foster Urie, Jr.), her sister Janet Urie and her husband Donald, her brother Robert Urie and his wife Elsie, and Rachel’s husband, Richard Lafont. All five children survive her: Kenneth and his wife Carol of West Glover, Harriet of East Montpelier, Barbara Cobb and her husband George of Monroe, NH, Carolyn of East Montpelier and Roberta of Moore, MT. Also surviving are six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. [names omitted]. Each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren has an intricately embroidered and sequined felt Christmas stocking that she crafted in her later years. Jean also leaves many nieces, nephews and other extended family, all of whom she knew better than anyone because of her great interest in family genealogy. Jean published three books of family genealogy. Two record the Urie-Young families: Heather Transplants (1981) and Heather Transplants: The Seedlings (2002). Stepping Stones (2009), chronicled the Stone Family. In these works, she traced the family roots back to Europe, working diligently on centuries long ago and current genealogy. Jean assisted with and saw an update to her Heather Transplants with the 2018 release of Branching Out by her daughter, Harriet. Her interest in history was not limited to her own family. She was a founding member of the Glover Historical Society (GHS) and one of the compilers of the History of the Town of Glover, Vermont (1983). Her extensive research is found in many GHS publications and research projects. She photographed every house in Glover and assembled albums of the photos, compiled a history lot of almost all properties in Glover, recorded the inscription from every cemetery stone in Glover, and collected genealogy for over 80 Glover families. For many years, any historical query that made its way to Glover was forwarded to Jean by the town clerks or historical society and she carefully researched (before the days of the Internet) and responded to all questions. Many of these near and far-flung genealogists, related to Jean or not, ended up considering her a friend, and several planned trips to Glover to meet her in person. Jean had a life-long thirst for knowledge, was a voracious reader, a careful researcher and gifted writer. She had many talents, ranging from bird watching and folk painting to puzzles. She delighted in learning new historical stories about Glover and kept hundreds of people and events from Glover’s past straight in her mind until the very end of her days. She was truly Glover’s historian, though she was far too humble to ever accept that title. Jean was a member of the West Glover Congregational Church and held several offices and served on many committees at the church, including the Willing Workers and Sunday School. When her family was young, Jean was active in the Parents’ Club at the school. She served on the board of the GHS for 20 years and was on the Glover Cemetery Commission for 15 years. The Town of Glover dedicated the 1999 Town Report to Jean in recognition of all her gifts of time and research to the town.” All the work she has done to record family and town history is her lasting legacy.
