Description	:	Jean Maxine DeVore, 85, of Batavia, IA passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society in Ottumwa, IA. As were her wishes, her body has been cremated. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2019 at the Cranston Family Funeral Chapel in Batavia, IA. A graveside service will be held in the Batavia Cemetery immediately following the visitation with Pastor Kelly Peavey officiating. Jean Maxine DeVore was born May 9, 1934, during a dust storm, at St Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa, IA to Merle and Stella Wilcox Smothers. She attended several different schools during her early years as her family moved frequently with her father's work. After a chance encounter, Jean met and fell in love with Arlo DeVore. The two were married at a double wedding in the Assembly of God Church in Eldon on February 6, 1955. It wasn't long before they became loving parents to four daughters: Marilyn, Jacquilyn, Sherilyn, and Dena Lynn. Jean was a homemaker and a seamstress. She loved nature and spending time outdoors. She felt most as peace with a cup of coffee in front of a beautiful sunrise. Jean loved to cook for the family. She always made a full meal, often including many of the vegetables she canned from their own garden. Jean was a very caring and giving person who spent several years working for the American Home Finding Association, where she cared for babies when there wasn't a home for them at that time. She also served on the board for the Batavia Community Center. Jean was a loving soul who was up for anything and would help anyone. She will be deeply missed by her family and her many friends. Jean was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband, Arlo (1994). Left to share her story are her four daughters, Marilyn (Dennis) Cline of Lake Rathbun, IA, Jacquilyn (Carl) Hearn of Batavia, IA, Sherilyn DeVore of Batavia, IA, and Dena Lynn DeVore of Batavia, IA; five grandchildren, Dillon (Ashley) Cline, Cody Cline, Neal (Alyx) DeVore, Carly (Lance) Morris, and Skylur DeVore, eight great grandchildren, Haylen, Lakeyn, Oliver, Rozaline, Juniper, Drake, Dexter, and Temperance, as well as many extended family and friends.
