She was a founder and past president of the Maryland chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) after her son was critically injured by a drunk driver. As she told a candlelight vigil in 1982: 'What finer tribute can you make to the victims of drunk driving, and to future generations, than to dedicate yourself in both your public and private life to the goal of saving lives by reducing drunk driving?'"
