Visitation was held on Monday, April 19 at Central Presbyterian Church, 3829 Grand Avenue in Des Moines, with graveside services 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 20 at the Nevada Cemetery. Julie was born in Nevada, Iowa, on September 7, 1914 to Emmett and Anna Fay (Lockridge) Armstrong. Her grandparents, William and Anna Fay Lockridge, were among the earliest settlers in Nevada. After graduating from Nevada High School in 1932, Julie worked for the next twenty years in Salina, Kansas, living with an aunt and her older brother, Lloyd. During World War II Salina bustled with activity from an Army base and a B-29 bomber plant, and Julie did volunteer work at the local USO. Moving to Des Moines in 1953, she worked in the loan department at Bankers Trust until retirement. Julie’s activities included golf, bowling, gardening, and world travel. She had been a member of the Des Moines Symphony Guild and was a member of Central Presbyterian Church for over fifty years. At Central she was the dedicated long-time treasurer of the Presbyterian Women’s Association. Last September Julie was particularly pleased to be honored as a seventy-five year member of PEO. She first joined PEO Chapter AM in Nevada, then continued her membership through Chapter KD in Des Moines. The last of her generation, Julie was preceded in death by her brothers, Frank, Lloyd, John, and George and her sisters, Margaret Jane, Jean, Lydia, and Dorothy. She is survived by her nephews, John Schultz of Indianola, Iowa, and Stephen Schultz of Crestwood, Kentucky, and their families. Julie will be remembered for her grace, generosity, her Lockridge-Armstrong sense of humor and her dedication to her family. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.
