The family will greet friends from noon until 1:00 p.m. when a memorial service will be held and a luncheon will follow at the church. Jeffrey Cooper was born on Jan. 7, 1964 in Ft. Madison, Iowa to Roger and Laura (Vincent) Cooper, where he was raised and graduated from Ft. Madison High School with the class of 1982. In addition to playing first chair french horn for the FMHS symphony band and participating in marching band, Jeff was selected as a 3-time Iowa All-State Music Festival participant, and was the recipient of the John Phillips Sousa Award in 1980. During his high school years, Jeff also played french horn with the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra. Not limiting himself to music, Jeff also excelled in golf and tennis and played on the FMHS Men’s Tennis team in 1981 and 1982, when the team won the Southeast 7 Tennis Conference Championship. Jeff attended the University of Iowa on a music scholarship from 1982 until 1984 when he transferred, also on scholarship, to the St. Louis Conservatory of Music, where he attained a B.A. in Music: Performance. According to Jeff, the two years he spent at the conservatory under the direction of his mentor, Roland Pandolfi, were the most influential and pivotal in his development as a professional horn player. In 1985, Jeff was invited to play in the All-American College Orchestra for one year at Disney’s Epcot Center in Florida. Jeff also spent several summers at the prestigious Northeast Music Camp in Ware, MA, teaching and collaborating with many musicians who became his life-long friends. Some of these friends even became colleagues upon his invitation to fill an assistant horn position in Tenerife, which afforded him further teaching opportunities and afforded his fellow musicians both personal and professional performance opportunities. In 1987, while pursing a Masters of Music degree in Performance and Teaching at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY, Jeff was invited to perform with the la Orquesta Cuitat de Barcelona. After playing with this orchestra for one year, Jeff auditioned with several other orchestras and was offered five different professional horn positions in Europe, each orchestra offering him the position of principal french horn. In 1988, Jeff accepted the first horn position with the la Orquesta de Tenerife, Canary Islands, in which he played for nearly 28 years. In a statement released from the Sinfonica de Tenerife upon his passing, Jeff is referred to as a partner since 1988 “who has been a crucial interpreter in the consolidation of our work in concert season after season.” Among the many and varied virtuoso works Jeff performed, the most challenging and acclaimed was the Four Horn Concerto by Richard Strauss whose composition attempts to musically interpret death not as an end, but rather a transition. What Maestro Cooper relished most about performing this piece was that it not only required him to play to the best of his ability, but it also gave the horns the last word. In the course of his 28-year professional music career, Jeff was invited to play on numerous occasions as a guest horn player across Europe in places such as Gran Canaria, Barcelona, Pamplona, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Berlin and Salzburg. In addition to his musical gifts, Jeff also possessed considerable culinary talents which were observed and enjoyed by friends and family alike. His specialty was a signature Spanish stew called paella (pie-AY-ah), which took the better part of a day to prepare and cook. Jeff not only savored the cooking duties but also delighted in serving as master host on such occasions when food and fellowship were central themes. Jeff is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Julie Aubé and his daughters, Marie Esther and Arantxa Cooper Aubé of La Laguna. Also surviving are his mother, Laura Cooper of Denmark, Iowa; his siblings, Keating (Janet) Hissem, Laura Lee McCollister, Rachella Dravis and Kenny (Kerry) Cooper; along with nieces Heather (Matt) Fuger, Kelsey (Ben) Summers and Emma Dravis; and nephews Jeremy (Kelli) Hissem, Kole and Kameron Cooper; and great nieces and nephew, Lily, Keating, Kinsey, Kaylin and Blake. Jeff is also survived by his in-laws including: Gaston Aubé and Louise Sylvain, Louise (Michel Landreville) Aubé, Rachel (Pierre Gendron) Aubé and Martin (Maryse Beaulieu) Aubé, all of whom reside in Canada. Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Roger, and his brother-in-law, Brad Dravis. In Jeff’s honor, a memorial fund has been established at Farmers Savings Bank to help fund the further education of his daughters, Marie Ester and Arantxa. A private burial will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Fort Madison in December of 2016.
